@ebinmaine Sorry Jimmy, Can't use a dipstick tube. Nowhere for it to go because of how the chassis is built, flush pipe plug it is.

Since we are on the topic, what fluid should this thing have in it? I know that what I took out was once gear oil, but that doesn't get me a grade or amount,

Pretty much any gear oil between 75 and 140 will be fine.  Old style straight 40 engine oil is also usable.  GL4 versus GL5 does not matter because there are no brass/yellow metal alloy parts.

We use cheapo Wally world whatever is around 75 to 90.

Cool, I'm pretty sure I have a row of 80-90 on my "extra" shelf at work. I like 80-90 a lot more than 75-140.  Ford didn't have rear end issues until they switched,

I don't pour fluids, except for engine oil.

I have one of these:

Yeah, I bought it for draining/filling transmissions at work. Although in this case I'll probably just dump 2 quarts in the dipstick hole before I seal it.

I might also look into opening a hole in my storage bin big enough to allow access to that plug. Depends on where exactly it lands.
