dkg520 523 #1 Posted Monday at 06:47 PM I looked at a 1979 C161 a neighbor wanted to sell and I noticed the Kohler 16 was slightly off color. The tag on the motor says Kohler Replacement. I had never seen this before. My neighbor says the motor was on it when he purchased it. It runs very well with no knocks or smoke.
ebinmaine 70,699 #2 Posted Monday at 06:52 PM You see the base color? I've seen them blue, gray, yellow. Years ago we used to call those, counter engines. Named so because they were literally just bought right over the counter with no particular machine in mind when it was built by Kohler.

I understand the reason and you can't fault them for looking elsewhere to have work done.

As the late '70s and early '80s came around the sizes of the tractors were increasing as were the sizes of the implements and power required to operate all of that. 1970s the bread and butter tractor was the C120. Top of the line the C160.

I’ve tried hila coil, it didn’t hold, tried a cheap aluminum solid thread insert and it didn’t hold. So I bought a better steel insert and so far so good. If it blows out, ill try to find a plug with bigger thread, and thread it to fit

If it blows out, ill try to find a plug with bigger thread, and thread it to fit Kohler big block flat head engines ranged from 10 to 16 horsepower. The 16 is the only one with 10 cylinder head bolts. We don't have a garden tractor pulling Community up here but from what I understand that is a highly sought after engine for that genre. To some extent, because of that, original parts can be hard to find. But on the flip side of that coin, aftermarket availability of parts is actually pretty good. There are brand new cylinder heads available that are not actually that much more money than trying to find a hopefully good used one.
