Racinbob 11,720 #1 Posted Friday at 12:54 PM Hey Canadians! Our grandsons basketball base was totally destroyed by a storm a few days ago. We found this contraption and really liked it so we bought one. The reviews were great overall with a few stating bolt shear. I'm sure it was during a storm and if it's bad enough anything can fail. But I want to minimize the possibility by upgrading the hardware. I think I answered my own question on the internet but I wanted to get verification from a more reliable source. These carriage bolts are marked 8.8. It that the equivalent to Grade 5?

adsm08 2,636 #3 Posted Friday at 01:09 PM (edited) I'm not Canadian, but I deal in metric hardware a lot more than I do SAE. Yes, you are correct. 8.8 is the metric equivalent of grade 5. 10.9 is a grade 8. The shear numbers are not identical, but they are close enough to be considered "the same". I addressed it to Canadians because the company is in Quebec. The instructions showed that it used hex bolts with flat washers but a supplement stated that 8.8 carriage and flange nuts replaced them. I suspect it was from the few failures. The original base was the typical plastic doo-dad that you can fill if you want. I had it strapped down and when the storm hit and the base stayed put but the pole tore away from it. Fortunately (and surprisingly) the pole and backboard weren't hurt.
