JDMiller 15 #1 Posted Sunday at 10:18 PM (edited) I apologize if this has been covered in another thread. Was going to get an electro-12 to fix up, but seller stopped responding and found a $400 GT-14 to play around with. There is no PTO on it currently, and before I buy one for it for a pretty penny, I was wondering if anyone has done a manual PTO conversion on one of these, if its worth doing, and if so if there is a kit or do I need to put my redneck upbringing back into use and rig something up? Edited Sunday at 10:19 PM by JDMiller forgot a detail.
8ntruck 7,368 #2 Posted Monday at 02:06 AM Somebody probably has made this conversion and will cone by with an answer soon. Wheel Horse models share many, many components, so a conversion to a manual PTO just might be a bolt on.
oliver2-44 10,340 #3 Posted Monday at 10:45 AM Call Lincol at A-Z Tractor, his info is in the Vendor Section. Get a manual PTO off a 953 or 1054 or a Charge or Raider. You will have to drill mounting holes in the side of the hood stand for manual rod bracket. Depending where you want the PTO handle/knop to be you may need to lengthen the PTO rod by cutting and welding in a section of round rod. The length could also be fine if you don’t mind reaching forward a little.
953 nut 57,766 #4 Posted Monday at 11:14 AM As @oliver2-44 said, there are a couple of good ways to look into. The 953/1054 units connect directly to the 1 1/8" crankshaft of your engine and though they are not plentiful they would work out well. The link below shows the parts involved. The PTO from any Hydro Wheel Horse prior to '73 with a 1 1/8" engine crankshaft will work as well. The PTO disc attaches to the drive pulley on the later ones so you will need it too. The Charger manual attached shows this type.
JDMiller 15 #5 Posted Monday at 10:20 PM Thanks for the info! Sounds like a pretty straightforward thing, Might try to rig up a mount plate that adapts to already existing holes on the tower rather than drill though. i am one of those people that hates to drill holes in anything antique/vintage unless there is an absolute need to. I am still leaning towards converting though as its one less point of electrical failure that I can mitigate. Is there any advantage in keeping the original electric PTO setup vs a manual one? The electrics are either off or on, no in between or gentle start. That instant on is hard on parts too. Made up my mind and found a used set of manual parts for $140 so going to go that route. Thanks for helping me make the decision all!
