Well...... what's too many horses ? Is to many when you have no more room in the garage so you have to start leaving them outside ? You can say you are "tractor heavy " but are you really ? Right @WHX??. I picked this up today. I'm not really a parts buying guy, unless I need them, but I saw this listed and you know. Love at first sight. Appears i just bought a 1969 Charger 10. Or parts of one. PO removed the original tecumseh engine and was going to install this 10hp Kohler. Well as you can see he didnt get far. Engine is on frame not properly secured and nothing else is hooked up. Nothing. Wires hanging all over. Parts off of it. Im not sure if i have everything. I also am unfamiliar with these " newer engines" that dont have the old starter generator.  Not sure what works and what dosnt. Just got it home. If you kind fellas can take a look at what i photographed and tell me whats missing or what i will need to attempt to get this thing running again or if I just should rob some parts from it. Wiring it will be very difficult for me. I have said 100Xs I'm a horrible mechanic and even worse electrician. What ever I decide to do with it your opinions will be appreciated. Thanks

Your Kohler engine was used in many models with the 1972 Charger 10 being one of them. Wiring is fairly simple.

Use the diagram for the 1-0410 model and a simpler 3 position key switch 103990 can be used.

Looks like a Keeper to me.  Good tins, good tires, good seat, PTO parts all there.  If the Sundstrand test good,  put a carb and battery on and run it.

Was just out looking it over again and might have figured out why PO gave up on it. I will look more closely at it as the weather warms up but it looks like the mounting holes on the engine do not align with the holes on the frame. The engine appears to be wider. I never had a tractor with that kind of PTO before so I was fiddling with it and noticed I couldn't get the pulleys to line up and the mounting holes on the engine to line up. Might need an expert

I agree with Ed.

Regarding mounting - fitment can be a bit tricky, but if you get pulley measurements from someone on RS - height and distance - you can make it bolt right up with spacers... I'm doing that right now... .02

The right side might get fastened with bolts thru the frame into tapped holes in the block.

I put the tins on loosely and put the pto lever on how I think it goes. It's all there. Appears to be original paint. I know I can make it shine I just don't know if I can get it running. All these loose and unconnected wires are giving me a panic attack. Like I said when it's warmer I will look into getting the engine bolted to the frame so that the pulley s line up. I don't believe you can get both sides bolted down.

That is a good looking Charger, even has the hard to find Wheel Horse cinerite lighter. Your oil pan probably has threaded holes to attach the right side, check out the photo below. If the holes are not there some 3/8 "J" Bolts will work.

Last year at the Big Show I looked high and low for a belt guard like that one, finally found the only one known to exist so treat it with respect.

The wiring for a battery powered ignition with a solenoid is NOT the same as any of the  diagrams in the link Garry gave you. Your ignition switch appears to not be the factory switch (they weren't mounted with washers), Remove it and look for a part number like 103-990 ore something else. I can provide an easy to follow wiring diagram that will work.

Thanks Nut I will take you up on that diagram. I have no clue on how to wire this thing. I will crawl under it to check for those holes. I will also need the bolts as it didn't come with them. Do you know the size ?

I would say that while I have certainly thinned my herd down to about 7 machines, I would also not have passed on that Charger you just purchased.

20 years ago, you could still find nice machines on a regular basis. You could be picky... Nowadays it is much more rare to find one.

Any decent and inexpensive machine would be hard to pass up. I of course still dream of finding a nice clean C160 or C161-8.

You did good saving that tractor, no matter how many you have.

It was better in person then what it looked like in the photos I was shown. I didn't pay much for it. Was sold as a parts machine. Owner told me he was going to take some parts off and scap the rest. He got it from a scrap yard with the original tecumseh engine on it that he got to run but ran poorly.  He said the hydro worked fine. Then he traded something for this engine and just lost interest in putting it all back together. I can see why. Alot of work left, not sure I'm the man for the job. I know some of you guys put a limit at 100 dollars for nonrunners. This one fall into that category?

Those would be 3/8 - 16 by 1" with a lock washer if I recall correctly.

Agree with 953 on that wiring. Definitely not original. Sometimes best to take everything out and start fresh from diagram. Never know what's been hacked or rigged by P.O.

Using a 103-990 ignition switch the drawing below should be easy to follow for wiring the tractor,

Well I got the engine secured onto the frame. Going to take some more adjusting but at least I won't have to worry about it falling off. Here is a picture of the hardware I removed that the PO had holding it down. He also drilled out the holes so that his cheesey hardware would go through the holes at an angle. Not off to a good start but I'm still happy with it. Got the 103-990 ignition switch @953 nut recommend  ordered. Should be here next week. That's when the fun starts !

What did he have the plastic ball point pen holding together?

Seriously though, that’s a fine looking “parts” machine.  Very nice!

Did the oil pan have the threaded holes in the bottom?

1/4 - 20 bolts (AKA Stove Bolts) are what held all early Chevrolet cars together.

A Chevrolet is called a "Stovebolt Chevy" because the first Chevrolet straight-six engines, produced from 1929-1936, used slotted-head bolts, similar to those used on wood-burning stoves, to secure various engine components like the valve cover and timing cover. These bolts resembled the fasteners used on stoves, hence the nickname "Stovebolt".

Yes there was. I have to remove the belt guard again to see if the pulleys will line up. PO drilled out the holes on the frame so it's a little sloppy but I didn't fully snug it down. I used a 3/4 inch bolt to go into the oil pan. The stove bolts he used were at like a 45 degree angle so he could go through the frame and tabs on engine. I'm excited about seeing if it will fire but I'm a long ways from that.

So even though it's far away from running I thought I would give it a rub down with some boiled linseed oil. Sun is out today to warm the metal up to bring this original paint back to life. Came out great. Really looks good. Hard to tell from photos but it has a really nice patina. Hope it's going to run as good as it looks.

I also seem to be missing some mounting hardware so I could eventually mount a mower deck on it. Looking at photos it is hard for me to determine what is part of the tractor and what is part of the deck. Anyone have photos of both sides of the tractor with needed pieces? Much appreciated.  As I said this is unfamiliar territory to me as I never had one like this. Thanks.

The factory setup for a mower was a somewhat cumbersome arrangement with a cam that kept the belt tight . You would be better off adapting a mule drive to the front.

@Ed Kennell probably has all the parts and pieces you would need. The IPL below shows the parts, the highlighted ones are the major players.

So I take it nothing on the front of tractor. I believe I am missing a mounting plate on the left side. I have a front mule drive, wonder if I can use that with a different deck?

Been looking at a lot or Raiders and Chargers lately and was wondering if they all have LSD? I know most of them did but I was wondering if some of the later models might have had the Uni drives instead ?

I am wondering if there was ever a Service Manual for this particular tractor.
So far all I have found are Owners Manuals (one came with the tractor)
Since this is my first attempt at a HW with a Hydro I am probably going to need all the help I can get
      Any help will be appreciated

I own a Charger 9, it is a 68 and I am wondering what I should ask for it.
I personally want to trade it, just cannot find anything worth my efforts.
I found a younger gentleman in his 20's, he's over 650 miles away from me and he has himself a raider 12, I want it just he wants two tractors for it.
I personally feel my Charger is worth more than 250, as it is one of a kind.
      Please, let me know.

I just obtained a Charger V7 Automatic. The reservoir is empty and the tranny has no fluid present. There is some residual, so no corrosion appears to be present and the wheels turn freely.  I would appreciate input on fluid to use (I believe the manual recommended Wheel Horse #8827 or Texaco Transhydral).  Thanks.
