Starting a minor restoration

Taking apart my 1993 520h, I had a question?

What does everyone do with all the bolts, screws?  Do you get all new, some are not in great shape, some are.  Do you use all stainless?

Thanks

We use nearly all new Grade 8 hardware from Bolt Depot in Hingham MA.

Service is excellent.

Pricing is excellent.

We also use a Nyloc nut on as many bolts as possible.

This is likely not needed for most but have very hilly twisty terrain and have had bolts snap or come loose.

I personally don't use stainless because they tend to gall and strip when tightening with an impact driver.

Grade 8 gives us good corrosion resistance and of course,  strength.

If it's in good shape, clean it up and reuse. If not, replace.

Only exception - I always use new lock bolts on hubs.

Oohh yes.

Set screws.

We always use new set screws.

There'll be some in the hubs, maybe a couple pulleys.

I tend to reuse all fasteners that are in good condition. In my opinion the American Made hardware from the 1960s is far superior to the foreign made stuff you buy today.

Absolutely agree with that. That's why I use the source that I do.

Some of the stuff is marked made in USA and it is all high quality.

I am learning as I go, can't call this a total restoration, more like clean, re-paint as needed, replace as needed.

I'm not a big picture taker, I will do my best!  Had minor surgery so I won't have progress until next weekend.  I will need a newer hood, any suggestions on where to find that?  I have searched Ebay but not much.

depending on the rehab and the extent of the cleaning, painting etc -- i ofen use new bolts -- but if not new ---  i tend not to want to use old rusty bolt heads especially if doing any painting -- but what i will often do is buff the bolts - only takes few minutes --- cleaning any rusty threads with wire wheel --- but also buffing the heads to nice shine -- saves the old bolt but gives newer shiny look on the tractor

I also buff old bolt is bench grinder eire wheel. Clamp them in a vice grip to do the threads, then screw a nut on and do the head. Lots of quality shop time. Wear safety glasses and a dust mask.
I then raffle can paint them or clear coat them.

Unfortunately I am running out of time, this is what I use to mow my yard, 1 acre.  I think my goal is to clean everything, not repaint items.  I'll clean all the nuts and bolts good, replace as needed.  What I do need is to fix the seat and figure out why the tractor has a hard time starting.

I put a marine primer bulb on my C-105 to help with starting. A couple squeezes and it fires right up... just a thought...

Definitely recommended.

I'm no Onan expert.

At the very least do:

New spark plugs.

ALL new fuel line

New filter(s)

Primer bulb

Clean out carb (rebuild?)

Carefully check intake manifold for vacuum leaks.

Carefully check fuel pump for proper operation.

Remove and clean out tank.

I wire wheel, buff original hardware also.

Saves a few coins and I just prefer to keep what I can from each tractor.
