Brohloff 0 #1 Posted March 14 My starter motor does not engage properly when initiated. Spins but does not engage the flywheel. Can this be repaired or replaced with new or rebuilt starter?
oliver2-44 10,264 #2 Posted March 14 I see you have 314-8, so I guess you asking about a Kohle Magnum starter. The exposed bendix (gear) shaft can get dirty and the gear stick or the spring can break. Look in the Kohler Manuel and it has a good section on starter maintenance. As a temporary test, find the starter bump out on the flywheel tin. Look in there and you should be able to see a little bit of the gear, shaft and spring. Get some brake clean or spray degreaser with a straw. Spray it in the while you have someone operate the starter on/off a couple of times. Bottom line is you need to pull starter and do some maintenance. If you have the Oman 14 I’m not familiar with it, but probable similar. 1
953 nut 57,532 #5 Posted March 15 If the cleaning of the starter shaft is successful you you will want to use a dry graphite lubrication on the shaft, no oil. This manual should be helpful. 2
peter lena 9,061 #6 Posted March 15 @953 nut agree on that , have regularly looked over the INTENDED FUNCTION OF A PROBLEM SPOT , look at every stage of , movement . before and after a tweak , to improve it . love a repetitive problem ? lets you zero in on what's holding up , total movement . like dry graphite , as well as super lube . started that years ago on cable connections , major gain point ? light extension spring , on pull to close / stop point ? penetrating oil / super lube , spring assist cable slide , every time you use the knob . also detail any connecting linkage for function . all my stuff has that now , for years , works every time . pete
pfrederi 18,285 #7 Posted March 15 If yo opt to remove the starter follow the directions carefully. The bolts that mount it also hold the motor together .
Ed Kennell 40,264 #8 Posted March 15 (edited) This may help if you need to remove the starter. Edited March 15 by Ed Kennell
Bill D 2,080 #9 Posted March 16 Why Kohler changed to that starter design from the K series design I'll never know. Huge pain to change compared to the K series. Try to keep the starter motor together when installing the new starter.
