broke hydro dip stick tube

Recommended Posts

1990ish 520H,

when trying to pull the dip stick out of hydro, I broke the dip stick tube very close to the tranny.  (see pic)

I have not taken off the back cover yet.  First I am trying to find out if I can buy a new tube?  is it easy to screw off (without dripping plastic into the Tranny)?  or will I be trying to JD welding it back on?

All thoughts and advice appreciated.

also, all hydro oil (5 qts) is out of the tranny right now.

Chris

Looks like it broke off flush with the case. Try and finesse it out with a needle nose. I doubt JB weld or some kind of plastic epoxy will work. Might not get it out without wrecking it but I'm sure some one has a replacement. put an add in wanted and try searching ebay.

I may even have one have to look.

You can likely find one at A to Z, one of our vendors.  Your biggest problem will be getting that broken piece out without getting fragments inside.  It is just like a plastic pipe nipple and you might be able to force a square bar in and turn it out like an EZ Out.

Just so you know, that SAE 30 should be 10W-30.

Will the dip stick cap fit tightly on a piece of black pipe the correct length?

Looks like @ebinmaine has you covered, I see SAE-30 marked next to the dip stick,          :confusion-shrug:           that should be SAE 10-30.

I've used the tapered tang of a large file as an easy out.

Can’t let EB take all the flack--I was an enabler of his getting that collection!

It’s a testament to how rarely they break that they seem to accumulate!

:text-yeahthat: Or a large flay screwdriver. It's threaded so it will need to be twisted out.

Maybe even heat the large screwdriver tip so it melts that plastic a little for some grooves which will give it something to bite to for spinning it.

@cgambino1018  found those transmissions  are rarely a one and done . years  ago , on initial  flushing / cleaning , there was  always a residue  left , went over to a  hi mileage ATF  fluid  as a cleaner , also put some hours  on its usage , near by housing CUL DE SAC , is perfect for  flushing  , drain down effect , like to wait  for a visible color change  , indicating  flush down effect , of course use every gear / range , also like   climbing gear lube , read specs , slinging  effect  insures , shifting ease . another thing , is that verifying my  initial , clean out was thorough , all my oils stay clean , new shift boot , grease the UNDERSIDE OF IT , ?  so it slides over the irregularities  of trans top , like a tie  wrap on top of boot , insures position , function , also be a good time  , to get  after related  tusty  lever / linkage  areas , make the rust run out , still amazed today  to see , visible movement areas , dry / rusty , I JUST DO NOT UNDERSTAND THAT . no squealing anything , pete
