courtneysg3 0 #1 Posted Thursday at 11:05 PM Hello I was wondering if it would be possible to upgrade the engine in my toro wheel horse 13-38hxl. there is nothing wrong with it but I would like to get maybe a 19 HP vanguard engine into it once I find one and have the cash. The current engine is a Briggs and Stratton 28m707-0122 from about 1995 it's a flathead engine. I was just wondering because I've seen people do engine swaps to newer engines online with older garden tractors but never in one that is as small as my chasis I know that the engine can be expensive but I want to get a brand new vanguard engine and I am willing to save the money for one from a reputable online store. I could only find twin cylinder vanguard engines that are new but I don't know if any Briggs and Stratton vtwin engine would fit but I would not want any more than a 21hp engine. Blasterdad 2,876 #2 Posted Friday at 12:42 AM It is possible to replace with just about any vertical shaft engine, but the real question is why? I have a 13-38hxl that runs great & does what it is supposed to do pretty well & that is to mow grass. That model of Wheel Horse is a lawn mower, not a garden tractor. It wasn't designed to run attachments or pull things that would require more power. Your money would be better spent on a 300 400 or 500 series of the same era. It's kinda like dropping a blown 426 Hemi into a Prius, it would look cool but thats about it. Just my opinion, I wouldn't want you to spend your money unnecessarily. That should be more than enough, check Cl, FB, ect. in your area. Look in the for sale classifieds on here too. Deals are out there. I'm not sure where you're located but I thought this was a pretty good deal....
