Cutting threads on larger round rod?

I'm joining two parts.

I have one side that's threaded. And one needs it...

Do they need to line up ?

Like would welding a rod coupler to the side of the solid rod and thread the other one into it?

Or weld the coupler straight on the end?

Cutting oil I have. Tapering the end of the shaft I can do. Drill press or tapping press, not happening. I don't have any way to hold the material straight other than by eye unless somebody has a different suggestion.

I'm late to the party.  How about a couple of homemade V-Blocks attached to the workbench?  EDIT: or even 2x4s with 1" holes in them.

You can drill holes through the V-Blocks above the rod, and insert a couple of pins to hold it in place. I'm not sure how you can hold the tap and turn it while keeping that straight... I haven't thought that far ahead!

Is this one of those big ratcheting pipe threaders?

EDIT:  DONT turn the tap.  Clamp it in the vice and turn the rod.

Not like to micro specs but yes. Really close.

I hadn't considered using a straight on connection because of the straight vs threaded rod.

The threaded piece is actually a long bolt.

I was going to have a threaded portion at both ends so I could attach to existing one and also add a stopper to prevent the plow frame from dropping over snow banks.

I certainly could use a bored out piece of 3/4" ID iron pipe as the welded connection.

Maybe cut the bolt and just make it longer with welding on pipe, thick wall tube or the solid rod or even a combination of rod and pipe?

I don't completely understand the assignment

You're headed the right way.

I'll get some pics later.
