18 Automatic trany manual

Recommended Posts

S416-8

Was suggested to me that I should pull and take the trany on the new to me 18 automatic apart before putting it into service. As this is something I am not afraid of doing but it is something that I have not done. Is there any literature available.. looking through the manuals now.  Thanks

There are, essentially, two types of Auto trannies in WH products...  the Hydro-Gear type and the later Piston-to-Piston type.   Your 1973 18hp Auto has the latter style...piston-piston and it is Sundstrand model 90-1137.  I have prepared an 'overhaul' manual to show the how-to refurbish this...with pics and narrative.  Here is the FREE .pdf file for you...and anyone else.

Why were you suggested to take it apart?

The usual 1st test is to chain it to a tree or solid object. If it can spin the tires forward and reverse, its a good hydro. That my :twocents-twocents:

Being new to the D's and not knowing anything about them, another member said that I should, if I plan on using it as a tractor, pull the trany and go through it to make sure there are no issues. Probably jumping too fast and too high because I just got the tractor to run for short spurts so I'm still waiting on the fuel pump so it will stay running. As soon as it does it will strap it to the tree and see if I can spin the tires.. thanks for that advice and will strap my feet to the ground so I don't jump so fast..

FYI

If you find it strong and fast in one direction but not the other go through the manual and do the maintenance and adjustment on the motion control linkage before you jump to an actual transmission problem.

I did this year ago on mine. Bigger job but if the case breaks you have an even bigger job. I bought my auto 18 with sheared bolts and they pushed through bottom of case. BEFORE you start check to make sure it is not already broke and repaired by others using weld or braze.
good luck!
