That's possible but I'm thinking that would be a go/no-go instead of go/ try to go thing. The seat switch apparently seems to be bypassed :hide:

I've seen this with relays A LOT. Most of the time it's been when the relay turns on high amp circuit but you never know

Bob, did you have a spark tester on at the 20 minute mark.  Any difference in the spark when she got ill..

Oops,I see Paul types faster than me.

Not at the 20 minute mark. But my tester is or is the same as the cheap HF thingy.

Thinking coil or...

Any chance this tractor has a kill relay? Weak coil in the relay starts to give up the ghost after 20 minutes and tries to ground out the IGN coil?

Can you try & run it disconnected from the rest of the kill circuit?

Narrows it down to something on the motor.

Few years ago my 315 8 would just randomly stop - leave it sit a few minutes would start - this went on for months with a lot of frustration and profanity - turned out it was a bad rubbed through wire on the reverse safety switch - you've all but  eliminated  a fuel issue - to me it sounds like how a bad coil acts after it gets hot - after 20 minutes the magneto under the tin is also getting hot - could the 20 minutes be the time it takes the magneto to reach the temp it's shorting out ?

Apologies for hijacking @Racinbob

I'm hoping this is semi related to the learning curve for myself and others.

There's still an oil switch and a neutral switch. It wouldn't bother me to bypass them. The neutral switch would just stop me from starting it though.

I'm still thinking that would be a go/no go thing and I wouldn't have been able to save it by choking but it wouldn't hurt to try.

My threads can't be hijacked Eric.

I think that's to check the spark on your big truck.

I just ordered one of Pauls type.

Nah! Like I said, my threads can't be hijacked. It's all good stuff. I didn't say Eric wasn't a bad influence though.:P

This thread quickly confirmed some of my ideas, gave me some new ideas and maybe most of all, got me motivated to have another go at that possessed tractor. Only now I gotta wait until I can get it from the barn to the garage. And for some goodies to get here.:greetings-clapyellow:

Since it ic currently cold weather in In., think it would be worthwhile to run it to see if it quits at 20 minutes, or goes a bit longer?  If so, that kind of points to the coil.

Might try playing Mike Olfield's Tubular Bells in the background while you work on it - just in case it really is possessed.

You've replaced everything in the fuel system. The symptom has not changed at all. This tells me it isn't fuel. A rich mixture will fire easier than a lean one. Hence the recovery when choking.

I don’t know if this idea has been thrown in the ring but here goes - broken wire filament in the plug wire - motor and plug wire heat up - rubber casing expands separates filament - shut it down cools - casing contracts closing break .

I 've seen more than one Magnum coil take a dump. Usually right where it connects into the coil. For some reason mice like that spot.

Very true. I'm confident that the fuel system is totally out of the equation.

Everything looked good to the eye when I had it apart. It might seem odd with the very low hours but it is 28 years old. It was clear that it was the first time the shrouds had been removed and there was nothing in there that would say mouse attack. I've got a new coil coming and I'll have it apart to go through the valves I'll just go ahead and replace it. That is if I don't find anything that I can say for certain is the problem. :)

The extra leg is for sticking into a regular coil

Eliminating some of the rabbit holes that you have been told to look down I took a look at the wiring diagram (my guess is you already did that). There is no kill relay so that isn't the problem.  The clutch and neutral switches have nothing to do with maintaining ignition. Much like any other model the PTO switch and seat switch (and relay) are a part of the ignition system. If you locate and unplug the seat switch relay it can no longer provide a path to ground for the magneto. If that allows mowing beyond the twenty minute mark then a new $ 5.00 relay could be all you need.

For the sake of this thread, I just went ahead and assumed that the 'kill relay' that was referred to was anything that would kill the engine when I didn't want it to. On this tractor that would be the seat and PTO switches. Again, with the issue being what it is and not actually killing the engine I don't see it as being electrical. Regardless, the potential culprits have already received the electrical version of a catalytic converter test tube. Of course, it will be removed when the problem is found.
