Magnum 14 Frustration

Recommended Posts

RED-Z06

Ive had a clutch for a Husky T435 sitting in Illinois usps for 2 weeks.

USPS is doing their biannual mail count that determines carrier pay rates, so they they are holding stuff as long as possible, misrouting it, right up until the count is over, then it will all hit.  Less parcels, less letters, less mail...they can pay them less for 6 months

I have had more than one of those style fuel filters give me fits with air locks with anything but an electric pump pushing fuel thru it.

It is always best to push through a filter like this if possible.

Any type of pump will work harder to suck through a filter.

For a gravity feed system or of you need to filter on the suction side like a Briggs engine with the pump as part of the carb then you are better off using a fine screen type filter.

They are also prone to leaking. It came with the pump but I won't be using it.

150 micron for gravity feed. 75 micron is ok for a fuel pump system.

This one is an Indy branch issue. They are 'making changes' causing delays.

AMAZING! As I posted in #91 Feb. 23 was the last report on where it was. Yesterday I filed a missing mail report but figured they'd blow it off. All of a sudden it was updated to this. I also received 5 texts from them about my 'expedited' package. Once I have it in my hands I'll contact the seller. I also requested, and received, a refund from him yesterday. I'll pay him again. I already have another one coming so it looks like I'll have a spare on the shelf.:)

The coil made it here!

When the other one gets here I guess I'll have a spare. I was just tinkering this morning and made some fuel pump blanks. They could be drilled and tapped for a 1/4" barb but after pondering things I'm just sticking with electric.

I'll probably get back on the 314 tomorrow.

Getting things back together. Next week is supposed to be in the 60's and dry so it should be a pretty good test where I plan on mowing. Had a little problem with the coil baffle. It's simply a press fit and when I slid it on the right side cracked off. The replacement coil is about .006 thicker which probably contributed to it. It's p/n 4706307s and nla. I'll place an ad but it would be fine as is but I'd replace it if I could find one. It's just one thing after

another with this possessed tractor.

Guys, that won't work. It could be edge glued only and wouldn't hold. The piece broke off won't hurt if it's not there and I think I can secure the important part just fine. But I'm still gonna try to find a replacement. Just cuz ;)

I was thinking glue it to the coil and the edge then run the bolt in.

The bolts do nothing to hold this in place. You flex it over the bolts heads.

I replaced one of those Magnum coils on a Magnum 14 several years ago Bob and yes it was a tight fit with the replacement.   My old one had wiring issues but the baffle part did fit hack in.

I do recall the fitment was tight.  I agree with you the plastic portion is not that important for operating the motor.

And the added thickness sure didn't help.

I believe it would stay put as is but a tie wrap just to the right of the electrical connection would secure it even better. But a tie wrap will become brittle and break. I can at least get it back together to see where I'm at with this thing. I posted an APB in the classified. :)

'nother subject Lane since we've discussed it before. I got the rebuild kit for the small block starter and the bushing on the gear end is too big. I believe I can find one locally.

I am not aware of any manufacturer in modern times that would put in extra parts that cost them money and manhours that could be safely eliminated. It has to serve a vital function or it wouldn't have been there in the first place.               :twocents-02cents:

perzackly

The broken piece only assists in holding it in place but the main part definitely needs to be there. It looks to me like it's intended to direct more air over the coil, cylinder fins or both. I know there's some out there not being used. :)

I asked the Scrabble Queen (AKA Mrs. 953 Nut) about that word, she assured me it would be challenged,  but I like it.             :handgestures-thumbupright:

Go ahead and use it the next time you play Mrs. 953 Nut in scrabble. If she challenges it just show her this. Is she going to argue with Mr. Oxford?

I've got everything back together, put in a new plug, checked the top RPM and I'm good to go on a test run. Sparky is doing me a big favor and sending a replacement coil baffle. I decided to tie wrap the broken one for the test.

2066783276_314HTieWrappedBaffle.jpg.d058135f548c40bc7a3ab9f3fd224a18.jpg

It was such a nice day and I was too anxious to see what happens. If my tie wrap doesn't hold I don't see it as doing any harm to anything but itself. Once I get the replacement from Mike it will be a quick swap. and I want this tractor done right. I now have the shroud holes slotted so I only have to loosen the bolts and slip it off and back on instead of removing them. I do that to all my engine shrouds.

As I mentioned earlier the muffler was a possible cause. I doubt it but to make sure I garbaged it up with this thing I had on the shelf. Ugly but it will do the job intended. A test muffler in lieu of the old catalytic converter test tube. I found out that the original exhaust nipple on the engine is a fuzz larger than the usual 1" pipe size. The threaded hole is 1" but the nipple where the factory muffler clamps to is larger. I did have to fight it a bit. I made an O'Reillys trip and the old test tube thing came up in the conversation with the counter guy. He just looked at me like I was from outer space.

I got the deck mounted. The new path is a little over 100 yds long and will be about 7'+ wide. Before it would act up consistently at about 20 minutes of mowing. You could set your sun dial to it. I didn't time how long it took me to make the multiple needed but it was longer than that. It ran fine the entire time. My wife used this tractor more than me and she said it seemed to lack power especially going over the heavier area over the septic field tile. When I took over I noticed it too but it wasn't much. I attributed it to the hydro. Now it doesn't seem to. The weeds were heavier than in the yard but at about 60° it was cooler than a typical summer day.

I'm not 100% convinced I have it fixed but I'm very optimistic. Other than replacing the coil baffle with the good one I'm leaving it as is until we do a 'real' test when mowing season gets here. If it passes that one I'll put the original muffler back on. If it passes again maybe I'll start liking this tractor. B) If it doesn't that will tell me it was the muffler and I'll replace it properly. If it finally becomes a reliable machine I might just treat it to a foot pedal for the hydro. :)

I run one of those pepper cans on my 416 - the neighborhood Knows when I’m mowing or blowing snow - there’s and imperfection on the flange of the original and it leaks between the flange and block  - tried a gasket just burns gasket out over time . Threaded a short nipple - 45  then straight out with a 6” nipple to the  can .
