Alrashid2 378 #1 Posted February 12 Hey guys. Had a clumsy morning this morning. Needed to plow the 2" of snow on my steep driveway so got the ol' 312-8 out of the shed in the woods to bring it up to the house! Started sliding when turning and almost hit a tree, then got stuck in the snow, then as I was pushing her pushed my knee into the grate for the air cooling fan which gave me a nice brush burn, then was pushing on the hood and ended up popping it backward toward the steering wheel too far. The hood popped back into place but in the process the little rubber console edging popped off and disappeared in the snowy woods, never to be found again... I just bought that piece a few months ago because it was missing when I purchased the tractor! Anyway, I was going to buy the piece again off of eBay for $10 or so. Here is the listing and a photo: https://www.ebay.com/itm/403831507047 I then found an old post by @squonk where he said you can get more of it from McMaster Carr, part # 24175k44. However, looking at the specs and diagram, this part looks like it's all solid plastic... The part off of eBay was soft, squishy rubber, and I liked it because it really helped dampen the rattling of my hood. The holes the hood swivels on are greatly bellowed out so the thing shakes and rattles like nuts, but the soft rubber edging from eBay really dampened it down. Does anyone know here if MC Part # 24175k44 is hard plastic or is it also soft rubber? Would like to purchase today so I can get her back in business without the RATTLE! Thanks guys McMaster Carr link: https://www.mcmaster.com/catalog/131/4385/24175K44
ri702bill 8,822 #2 Posted February 12 The listing says the hardness rating is "hard". Very similar to the edging we used on 1/4" thick Lexan Machine Guard Doors....
TJ 183 #3 Posted February 12 I take gas line hose, cut it to length and then split it down the center. It holds in place and does a great job of dampening the rattle. 5

squonk 42,056 #5 Posted February 12 Mc Master has a hard liner but soft outer cover. Works fine. I've used it for years with no problems.

Hey Squonk just to confirm, you are referring to Part # 24175k44 correct? When you say a soft outer cover, what would you compare it to? I liked how the eBay one was pretty squishy and really cushioned my hood. @stvski80085 do you by chance remember the listing on Amazon? I am seeing so many and dont know where to start Thank you all for your replies! Edited February 12 by Alrashid2
squonk 42,056 #7 Posted February 12 The MMC edge guard cushions the hood but doesn't squish out. Plus it lasts. I've had this chunk of it on my C-160 for over 10 years. It's pretty close to the factory edge guard Wh used. I've used it on square hoods, C series hoods and the Black Hoods. I think I sent some to @Sparky
Alrashid2 378 #8 Posted February 12 @squonk ah interesting how your engine frame faces toward the driver, so the edging is on it's side. The 312-8 frame is straight up and down, so the hood would rest on the top of the edging and not its side. I ended up just biting the bullet and buying the ebay edging for 10 bucks. After shipping the MMC was over 30 bucks and I don't need that much... was hoping someone here would sell me some ha! This time around I am going to silicone caulk the edging in place so it doesnt pull off on me again!!

I ordered some a while back for another project that works great. It has 3M adhesive on one side and looks very nice. Used in a different way of course, but you get the idea... https://a.co/d/czFnqCZ

Old-school 3/16" black reinforced fuel line works nicely and lasts a very long time. 2

Alrashid2 378 #16 Posted February 14 Ended up buying the generic edging from Amazon that @kpinnc recommended (LINK: https://a.co/d/czFnqCZ) It'll work!! And I got 10 feet of it for like 10 bucks! I cut a quick piece off to test and found it totally cushioned the hood. Not as thick and squishy as the actual console edging I had last time around but it'll work just fine. Only issue with it is the adhesive tape sucks - not sticky at all. Maybe I got an old lot sitting for a while but it doesn't stick to anything... I'll cut the right length and run a bead of silicone caulk then set it into place. That should keep it in place! Will post pics later on. Thanks all!
Alrashid2 378 #17 Posted February 16 Amazon edging installed! Will let the silicone cure overnight. Tomorrow was supposed to be my log skidding day but it's pouring rain here today and a total mud pit, and tomorrow is freezing weather - so it'll either be totally muddy or an ice sheet. Either way, not ideal dragging and bucking conditions considering my yard is on a slope. But we'll see! Thanks again all
