How NOT to park a Garden Tractor

I was chewing my way through pushing the snowbank back and broke through a layer of ice into the leaves. 

FOOOP!

Down she goes. Right to the frame.

If that would have been an 8 speed you could have left it in low range reverse and walked away and let it eat itself out....or dig a couple holes to plant some trees this spring

 

So did the dig out work or did the green rig get some recovery fun?

Definitely would've been tree planting holes.

Don't feel bad . It happens. Inquisitive minds like we both have can sometimes lead us to say, why did I do that ? Knowing full well beforehand it was NOT a good idea. You know how I know we think alike, I got the 5000 lb JD off the beaten path trying to get over the brook headed to the house from the Cabin 2 hours ago plowing out back. I was almost out of options then I realized I had a small pedal to engage the diff lock and by golly it got me out. Had it  in 4 wheel drive as well. How did you make out Bro ? We got an additional 8'' of snow. Just read the outcome.

Diff lock would be wicked handy. 

I've thought several times about changing this transmission to a Limited Slip Differential but I really like the brute strength of the 8 pinions.

That is a tough scenario. That straight pass with the blade centered leaves precious little wiggle room to get it free. Low range in reverse and a tug from one of the others in the herd works. That is why all of ours have a hitch with either a ball or eyebolt....

This is far and away the heaviest tractor in our Herd. Over 1400 lbs with me on it. 

 

There's nothing we have that'll tug that. 

 

And it was STUFFED in the two rear tire holes. 

When I get stuck I do it well !!!

Simple question:

 

Would a chain break pulling you out if the wind was calm and there was no reason to believe asking that question would result in a 50 page back and forth on the static vs dynamic load limits of fruit if the loom underwear size 3x???

Had something similar happen today:

 

We only got a couple of inches of snow but we had a bunch of ice/snow the other day and I was out scraping down the front walk with HHHOOOWWWAAARRRDDD!!!. My next door neighbor has all driveway about 8 cars wide but an entrance like 2 cars wide. My side walk meets his parking area. At the entrance there is a large deep storm drain which is the only drain on my street. Another neighbor was shoveling his drive way and had the snow piled up in the wrong spot near that drain. I came over and moved that pile very carefully because I knew that drain was there. I was just about done but decided to make 1 more pass. FOOOP!  The RF wheel sank into the drain. I was able to leave it in rev and push it back out but had to scramble to stop it once it was out.

I did something like that to my dad's 310-8 years ago.

 

Our yard was the drain field for an entire hillside above the house. Soil is red clay less than 12 inches down, so it gets a bit swampy.

 

I dug the rear in until it was resting on the deck. Took the truck to drag it out.

A week or two ago there was a car in the ditch pretty bad at the end of our road.  I went to go help, and began by planning to plow the road a bit and make a clearing to pull.  Well, I miss calculated the ditch.  Fooop!

Between my truck, Mrs. P’s 550 hp Suburban and the lifted Dodge, it took 12 wheels turning and over 1,000 hp to get me out!  I was up to the top of my passenger fender in the ditch, and the plow was buried too.  My little military shovel got quite the work out!  We also lowered the cylinder on the plow and shortened the chains about 8”, getting it some extra and much needed clearance.

 

*I won’t mention how many times we snapped the 4” yank strap, but Mrs. P managed to do this to the bolt I had in her her hitch…
