Mike'sHorseBarn 3,077 #1 Posted February 9 So I've had my eye out for a nice 314H to use to mow grass and use around the house, but they seem to never be for sale around me. A 520lxi came up for sale on it's intriguing me. Has a 20hp kawasaki and 400 hours. What do you all have to say about those? I'm unfamiliar with toro's that new. How is parts availability etc? I also don't really what what's a good price for one either.
8ntruck 7,293 #2 Posted February 9 I think @Pullstart has one of these in his heard. They are said to be beasts. Like any piece of machinery, the durability and reliability depend on how it has been used and maintained.
kpinnc 13,285 #3 Posted February 9 Both options are tough machines. Both use basically the same hydrostatic. Simply put- the 312 is a simple, easy to work on machine. If the engine was properly maintained it will run thousands of hours and is literally bulletproof. Thousands of spare parts available for it. Every attachment made for classic machines since 1973 will fit on it. The 5xi is a bit more complex, and likely more expensive. None of the attachments from other tractors will fit, though New Holland also used the same machine painted blue. If it comes with multiple attachments, great. If not, the search for them will be more involved. 2

I just don't like the twins for mowing. They burn too much fuel and throw off too much heat.
Handy Don 13,148 #5 Posted February 9 (edited) IMHO the 314-H is the mid-range “best versatility” model along with the 854 at the low end and the swept/reduction 520’s at the high end. Strong, good on fuel, and excellent components. 48” deck or blade--no problem. 12” Plow--no problem. Easy maintenance. Certainly there are “C’s” out there with hydros that are close but the Eaton is a fave. Edited February 9 by Handy Don
squonk 42,100 #6 Posted February 9 If you want an Eaton look for a C-145 or 65

The 5xi also has the Eaton 1100, but the transaxle is 90 degrees offset and shaft driven. Edited February 9 by kpinnc
Pullstart 63,929 #8 Posted February 10 Mike did you run my Xi at the plow day? I’m always impressed! It has a truck like frame and is all around hugely beefy!

JoeM 7,889 #10 Posted February 10 I have had both and both are nice. If you are looking for comfort, the Lxi is the machine. Power steering, very stable on slopes, high low range transmission, and a awesome foot control for the hydro. As far as fuel economy, that liquid cooled Kawasaki engine is a sipper, and there is a lot less operator heat. Parts are out there and just as available as the other WH stuff. A 60 inch deck is available and they cut nice. The 48 uses the same shell and spindle parts as the 3,4 and 500 series, The deck hanging hardware is different. Snow plow is longer, 2 1/2" longer than the 520 with an extension, can be modified to fit if necessary. Tillers will work but use a different belt arrangement and mule drive. 400 hours is not that much if someone changed the oil. The LXI I have on my FEL has 1700 hours. Runs okay but is a little tired. I would expect to see a low hour machine between 1-2K. I still have a 14HP hydro machine and every now and then I get nostalgic and run it.......but that wears out quick and I am back on the bigger machine. The 522xi has the mower deck now. I suppose the older I get, the more I lean toward comfort.
WHX?? 50,141 #11 Posted February 10 I think Tom has a couple too. @Shynon They pop up around here abit but just never had the hair for one. Most are pretty beat up and attachments rough and since they are specific. They were considered pricey in the day ... the ultimate estate mower and none others had much to match.
Mike'sHorseBarn 3,077 #12 Posted February 10 Thanks for all the replies, the one I'm looking at is listed for $1,600 and in the video it's running good and seems in decent shape. I have my eye on a c-165 hydro as well, but I can't tell if it has the eaton or sundstrand. I know the 1980 models still had the sundstrand. 15 hours ago, Pullstart said: Mike did you run my Xi at the plow day? I’m always impressed! It has a truck like frame and is all around hugely beefy! It will run most all day with one tank of fuel. It’s a HUGE tank (with a gauge)! @JoeM might be able to confirm, but I bet it’s a full 5 gallons or more. JoeM 7,889 #18 Posted February 10 (edited) yep 4.25 but the manual says to leave a little room in the tank. Another thing I weighed mine with out the deck and it was just short of 1000 by 25 lbs One nicety is the transmission has a neutral and makes it easy to tow! Those tire sizes are kinda disappointing for this market of tractor, id have liked to see an 18x8.50-8 up front and at least a 24x12x12 in back, really makes a tractor sit up

Cee245 820 #22 Posted February 12 @Mike'sHorseBarn, My brothers and I have a camp where one mowers is a 520xi with the kohler we've owned for aboot 10 yrs.... Has about 5XX hrs on it and its a very nice heavy duty, capable machine. We only use for mowing, but it's been reliable. (Had a tiller in past). The 48" deck cuts very nice. My Dad has 2 520xi's and both hadve been very good to him as well. I haven't owned or used a 520Lxi with the kawi, power steering though. In my area, Northwestern, PA, the XI's are generally are priced close to double what a comparable 314H is. The Xi's are nice, but harder to find implements. In my area, ~750 for a good 314H, maybe with a couple implements. And ~1200-2000 for a comparable Xi package. Of course, some steals come up if you're looking close enough
