1958 KOHLER 4HP CARB

Recommended Posts

WHX??

Definitely need a new plunger and something doesn't look right with the inlet seat.

Correct one would not have the screwdriver slots.

When rebuilding carbs ALWAYS use a Kohler kit. That one has not.

The needles look pretty rough too.

@ebinmaine care to add?

Time for a new carb.

Try https://isavetractors.com/ or yes K&B if not fond of offshores.

http://www.psep.biz/index.htm used to have them best call to see  if they still do.

if you see them for this price it's an off shore https://www.amazon.com/labwork-Carburetor-Kohler-4685301-S-4605303-S/dp/B0719B6PD5/ref=asc_df_B0719B6PD5?mcid=349f01a53b0f344693cf781c0f2421f8&tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=693770001515&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4393961188063983633&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9019459&hvtargid=pla-523073608488&psc=1

Personally i've not had much problems with them but others have reported bad luck.

Points push rod may be found here http://www.psep.biz/store/kohler_points_condensers.htm but again best call. I don't have one apart to get a measurement on length.

Kohler used 2 different point plungers over the year.

Yes I thought one was aluminum and one was steel I could be wrong. I do remember one was favored over the other. Could apply to big blocks tho. :confusion-shrug:

@76c12091520h Brian

or

@Jake Kuhn

Or CALL Lincoln at A to Z Tractor in PA.

I buy almost nothing from isavetractors. I like Norman as a guy but I just can't justify the cost considering I've seen two of his supposedly better than cheapo carbs worn right out after a short life. That's not good money sense.

Folks seem to have better luck with small block Kohler carbs than big block carbs as far as cheapos.

Personally  - I’m finished running any aftermarket carb on any older engines until I can't replace the originals at all.

Yes Mr. Moore in the offshore kits which aren't worth a hill of beans and again are dirt cheap ... 4 for 10 bucks. Ok if you are just going to use the gaskets for bowl cleanings but DO NOT use the the inlet parts they will not work.

 You must get the one that are in the Kohler packages --- around 15 for one!

I agree Kohler parts are getting nuts but shop around ... You'll find them much cheaper. You can get the ones for big blocks and trim to length. Diameter is the same.

Points push rod apparently changed after a point.  If you google eh Kohler Kit 220506 (used on older engines) it comes with two different push rods.

Low volume, low demand, significant cost of carrying stock.

Brian sent me a nice restored carb. I'd love to try it but still battling no spark condition.  I have another thread going under "Electrical".
