Carbon brush riding on the axle just might prolong bearing life.

 

On large ships they use a brush on the prop shaft.

I have a customer that does bearing failure analysis in his lab.  Samples of grease can be pulled with his Grease Thief product.   I make custom fixtures for him and often cut bearings apart so they can be analyzed, one thing that is found may be the marks from electrical current that is the subject of this thread.

Most large generators have carbon grounding brushes or copper weave grounding straps riding on the shaft
