MainelyWheelhorse 724 #1 Posted January 25 Hi All, Over the last few weeks I have been working on a Kohler M12 I got from @ebinmaine. I’m getting to the point where I could start it. How are you guys test running the Kohler Magnums? It says in the paperwork I got with my 312, it has to be wired a certain way due to the ignition. I’d rather not fry anything if I can help it. Thanks!
pfrederi 18,102 #2 Posted January 25 Magnums run with no external power. Have gas and carb set hit teh starter and she will run. Now stopping it is different you need to ground the Magneto or short the spark plug. Just do not apply voltage to the mag kill wire. Depending on your charging system it is one of the 2 or three wires coming from the engine. Does you engine have a voltage regulator on the front of the air shroud? The engine is sitting on a bench with nothing besides a ground wire off the starter attached. Edited January 25 by MainelyWheelhorse
squonk 41,783 #4 Posted January 25 Yes that's the regulator. Make sure you clamp that baby down! Funny story. My B-I-L had a vertical shaft 8 HP Briggs. He wanted to see if it would run. He had a 55 gal drum with a piece of plywood on the top. He bored a hole in the plywood for the crankshaft. Checked the oil and put some gas in the tank. Engine had no controls or muffler. One pull and it was running wide open with no way to shut it off! It just spun around and bounced all over with flames sparks and a lot of noise. The real funny part was my B-I-L panicking !
pfrederi 18,102 #5 Posted January 25 (edited) OK The center wire will be one of two wires that come out of the engine (it would go to the R terminal on the ignition switch) The other wire is the magneto kill wire. it would go to the M terminal on the switch. For your testing just jump the starter and to shut down ground the Mag wire. Edited January 25 by pfrederi
