When Marcellus Gilmore Edson first patented peanut butter in 1884, he probably didn’t realize it would become a taste sensation that would sweep the nation. Whether you go crunchy or smooth, on January 24 we put down our cell phones and pick up our spreading knives to celebrate National Peanut Butter Day.

In the 1840s a resident of New York, Rose Davis started making peanut butter.

Historians say that a Canadian chemist named Gilmore Edson filed the first patent for his ‘peanut candy’ in 1884.

In 1895 Kelloggs’ patented their ‘Process of Preparing a Nut Meal,’ which also included ‘ a pasty adhesive termed nut butter.’

The first recipe for peanut butter and jelly sandwich was written by Julia Davis Chandler for the Boston Cooking School Magazine of Culinary Science and Domestic Economics in 1901.

Peanut Butter was introduced at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904.

On celery, bagels, and apple slices, it must be extra crunchy for this nut fanatic.

My favorite go to whenever you get a hankering, peanut butter and strawberry jelly.   I had those for lunch just about everyday when I was working.

Honey is also another favorite, just for the change of pace.  And I have been known to grab a spoon and the jar of peanut butter for a snack.

Never met a Tradesman that didn't like a PBJ while sitting on a 5 gallon bucket in an unheated building in the Winter. Quick lunch breaks for sure and back at it. Only way to make a good living in the trades, keep moving and no rest for the weary.

I guess that I am the odd duck out because I love a peanut butter sandwich, peanut butter on toast, jam sandwich, and jam on toast.

However, I don't like jam and peanut butter together on the same sandwich or together on toast.

I wish peanut butter still came in these glasses.  I sold one in December for $750, she used it for a Christmas present.

Thanks for the heads up, @953 nut

My three-year-old grandson’s go to breakfast request is “peanut butter oatmeal....please”.

PB&Js and PB&Celery are my standbys.

My late brother could sit down with a jar of peanut butter and a box of Ritz crackers

and empty them both in one sitting!

I'm not far behind!

LOVE peanut butter 🥜

High in protein and good fats.

Nutritious and deeeelicious.

I eat more than I probably should admit.

Along with the uses of peanut butter other have mentioned, I throw a few more out for digestion:

A 1/2 spoon of peanut butter and the other half marshmallow fluff.  Hard to eat just one spoonful and best straight from the jars.

Peanut butter is a must on pancakes and waffles before the syrup goes on

Peanut butter in oatmeal (with raisons) or cream of wheat.

We have a friend who says she likes a peanut butter and pickle sandwich.  Never tried it and I've always kept a close eye on her since then.

I believe dad said when he was kid, in the winter, peanut butter came in a tin container and didn't want to be too far from the warmth of a wood stove otherwise it was to thick to spread.  I doubt peanut butter back then had all the sugar we now have.

Natural peanut butter without additives will separate with the peanut oil rising to the top. Most of the commercially processed peanut butter has had the peanut oil removed and replaced with soybean oil or other hydrogenated vegetable oils to prevent the soil from separating. The peanut oil is worth much more than the oils that replace it.        :confusion-confused:  I think the sugar has been added to get us addicted,   seems to be working.  I have a PBJ nearly every evening for supper.

There fixed that... one time Pullstart came to dinner and i made the most delicious bambi but he stuck his nose up at the sautéed mushrooms.  I asks Mrs P is he a picky eater? She says not really but now I wonder... :D
