702854boy 44 #1 Posted January 20 Lately we've been having trouble off and on with our 702. Today, it started just fine and we had it running for probably 45 minutes. However, when we shut it off to get the transmission unstuck out of gear, it would not start back up. It was barely even cranking. However, a few days ago, I tested the charging system I think because at idle it was showing 12.5 volts and at full throttle it was showing somewhere around 15. It even has a new battery that we got on Saturday. I can't tell from the voltmeter what is going on as it works on and off. But, I tried jumping it with our other tractor and that didn't work, then I tried the boost setting on the battery charger and that didn't work, then I tried the engine start on the battery charger and that still didn't work so now I have it on the charger and will check it in a few hours. We have not tried going through the s/g yet but it is probably due since I don't think it has ever been gone through.
ri702bill 8,637 #2 Posted January 20 Is the S/G excessively hot to the touch??? Worn bearing(s) and or bushing can allow the commutator to short out....
702854boy 44 #3 Posted January 20 I haven't tried touch the s/g but when I was in that area I didn't feel any heat which I probably would have since it is -8 outside right now.
squonk 41,774 #4 Posted January 20 How much of this is the original style high amp switch and wiring? Did anyone ever install a starter solenoid? What kind of shape are the cables in? It's takes almost 70 amps of inrush current to get a starter/gen rolling. And there are 2 windings in the shell of the generator. It can charge fine but not start.
702854boy 44 #5 Posted January 20 There is no starter solenoid I think, I think it has the original push button and key switch and the wiring was just redone last year shortly before the show and even before that, the tractor was rewired at one already. Check all of the grounds too Edited January 21 by squonk

squonk 41,774 #9 Posted January 20 702 came from the factory with an ammeter. Has it been changed to a voltmeter. If it's still an ammeter and in the circuit it could be your issue
702854boy 44 #10 Posted January 20 Yes it was converted to a volt meter, we did that last year when we redid the wiring. We do still have the factory ammeter but, it is on our 854 because I thought it looked coller than the sw ammeter that it had. Do any of you know of a wiring diagram that includes a volt meter instead of the ammeter?
702854boy 44 #11 Posted January 20 Could anything in the voltage regulator be part of my problem?
cleat 6,796 #12 Posted January 21 If you are getting 15 volts to the battery at full throttle then the charging system is working fine. Problem is somewhere else I would think.
