I looked up the amount of gear oil it took and it said two quarts I opened the fill on the side I put a quart of oil in it and it started to come out the hole so I but the plug back in and I started to fill in the dip stick hole on top and oil is everywhere now It wouldn't fill is there a trick to putting the other quart in

The side fill is really not useful. 

 

When you drained it did you do so from the bottom rear by the hitch?

 

Filling is much easier by using a straw in the funnel to allow air to escape.

The dipstick tube is a bit narrow and air has to escape as the oil is being added or it will burp and push oil back up the tube. A straw in the funnel that goes the full length of the fill tube like Eric suggested is good or you can put a piece of wire in the tube to keep the funnel away from one side of the tube allowing air to escape.

Did you raise the front wheels off the ground at least 12" while draining the gear oil  to get past the case hump at the bottom???

Removing the shifter makes for a great fill opening at the top......

It's been many years (decades) since I've even removed that 'oil fill' plug. Like Eric said, it's not really useful (I usually say worthless). Assuming you have a manual go with 1.5 qt. in the 3 and 4 speeds, 2 qt in the 6 and 8 speeds. There's been other recommendations over the years that are probably fine but I keep it simple. 

 

 

The nozzles on the gear lube I use work well. If I'm in a hurry a few squeezes speed things up. If it's torn down to this extent the seat bolt hole holds it fine. Or the filler tube. I find that there's plenty of air seepage around the shifter without removing it. Hydros are a different beast and that's where some of the tricks do well.

@Racinbob  agree with keeping it simple , because it is !  regularly check my lubrication  statis , so there are no surprises , like to grease lubricate  UNDER THE SIFTER BOOT  ?  that lets it slide with ease over the irregular , areas on top of the trans , also tye wrap  ABOVE BOOT   ?  that lets the boot move to its liking , since doing that years ago , by boot failure / cracking   is totally gone . most of my mods / changes , are based on REPEDITIVE FAILURE ,  thats a great spot , to ENHANCE WHATS  FAILING . ehample , most of the lever / linkage set ups are , sloppy loose , rusty , added washers / grease , detail exactly where its hanging up , all of my related linkages  move / function , with effortless use . step by step , look see , lets you eliminate , cause / reason . was checking out a guys mower  the other day , related cable / lever , sounded like  a rusty hack saw  dragging over a wire , WHAT COULD YOU POSSIBLY DO ?   wanted to suggest , but just left the scene ,  other side of the coin , pete

On my 867, I had no top dipstick and filler tube. The hoodstand frame had no hole cut for adding one. 

 

But I saw the setup in the pic below. I think it was in the 867 manual but I can't remember. 

 

Just add a 1 inch long pipe nipple and union so you can keep the plug but raise it. Never had issue with adding two quarts since.

Yep. this was the trick for raising the gear oil level on the 6-speeds without dipsticks--took nearly an extra quart!

I took the rear out of a parts tractor the original one had blown seals fluid leaked all out and wanted to upgrade anyways so when I took it out and tilted and left it drain on the floor into kitty litter

Yes I have 1 quart left to put it ill try taking the mounting bolt out first if that doesn't go well will try the funnel and straw trick
