gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,177 #4 Posted January 20 I have never understood this 6-speed 8-speed description. What 2 speeds does one have or not have over the other?

The brake drum was attached to a different point. Gear ratios are identical though.

Same gears -- 1-2-3-R and Hi-Lo with exactly the same ratios as the 8-speeds. Six came from marketing six forward speeds vs. the until-then-standard three forward speeds. Six speeds all had Limited Slip Differentials with either aluminum or steel end caps. Most had no dipstick. All had the brake drum on the “mushroom” gear shaft (as did the earlier 3-speeds) vs. on the cluster gear shaft of the 8-speeds. The switch on the brake drum shaft had two implications: 1) the drum rotates in the opposite direction, and 2) it rotates faster on the 8-speeds vs. the 3- and 6-speed transaxles. 2
stevasaurus 22,968 #7 Posted January 20 This 3 speed/4speed & 6speed/8speed thinking comes from Wheel Horse's own repair manual for "manual" transmissions. Take a look at the "contents" page #3 to understand how Wheel Horse looks at their tarnsmissions. There is "V" five sections...one for each of the different types of manual transmissions. Everything you need to know is in this manual. @702854boy the correct answer to your question is...all 6 speed transmissions have 1 1/8" axles. Take a look at page 3 of the above manual. 1
