702854boy 13 #1 Posted 19 hours ago I was thinking about putting in a new seal behind the brake drum on my 702, would anyone have an idea on which way the seal goes in?
ebinmaine 68,979 #2 Posted 19 hours ago Solid side out. When sliding the seal over the axle you may want to tape the key way if it has one. They can be sharp and slice the rubber seal.

ri702bill 8,582 #4 Posted 19 hours ago (edited) Find the appropriate sized driving tool ( PVC pipe, deep socket, etc) first. Remove the old seal, tape the keyseat over. Lightly lube the ID of the new seal and start it - by hand - on the shaft. Then use hand pressure on the driver to get it to the case. Then a few taps on the driver to seat it. Some seals go in flush, some a tad deeper. Note that on the original.... Edited 19 hours ago by ri702bill
702854boy 13 #5 Posted 19 hours ago Would I have to drain the gear oil out or would I be able to just jack it up and tilt it to one side? 1

The gear oil won't be that high. But.... If the gear oil is over 4 years old replace it. The anti foaming agents will be falling out of suspension by then.
702854boy 13 #7 Posted 18 hours ago The gear oil isn't that old, we changed it out I think when we put new tubes in the rear tires I think that was in the winter of '22 or early '23.

I think so because I had the drum off a few weeks ago and took it over to the parts cleaner and cleaned off all of the gear oil and cleaned up the brake pad and it had a key in the shaft. Trina's mid 60s tractors all have a key and set screw. My mid 70s have the oval or double d type.
