artfull dodger 435 #1 Posted January 12 I really wanted something bigger for moving my boat around and more comfortable at plow days. This popped up on fb in a WH group. I grabbed it up. Just purrs but dies after about 30 min of running. Most likely the coil is giving up. I will deal with that once warmer weather arrives. A worker cosmetic refresh is in order once spring arrives. Seeing if Terry can come up with a special Austim Awareness variation to the standard WH Automatic 18 decal set. Give it a tiny bit of flair, maybe puzzle pieces in the red background or lets see what he comes up with. Definatly a beast, my first time driving one of the big Horses. artfull dodger 435 #3 Posted January 12 (edited) Thanks. I love its the same vintage as I am, 1973. Previous owner had to put C series front rims and tires on it. Said something about it having 3/4 spindles. Been awhile since I messed with these, not sure if I need to find different bearings for the front rims or go hunt down proper 18" wide D series rims and tires for it. If we get a couple warmer days. I will pull the front tires off and look into what I need to do to make these work for now. has good rubber on them at least. Got lots to learn on the D series Horses. artfull dodger 435 #9 Posted January 12 The coil is reproduced now. Easilly found all over ebay. Only the OEM coil is hard to find and usually over $100 bucks. I will give one of the reproduced coils a shot, they are cheap. I wont be mowing with her, at least for now. I do want to find a complete mower deck and tiller for it eventually. artfull dodger 435 #10 Posted January 12 I need to get a couple 90' elbows to turn out the exhaust on each muffler, right now it blows straight down which will really stir up dust at the Portland swap meet or anywhere else I ride around that is dusty. She has the replacement mufflers with just a piece of threaded pipe sticking straight down. She is very quiet so want to keep this set up. If all the pipes were not solid rust, I would reroute and turn them into stacks with chrome turnouts. But I think it will stay like they are. Wish I could find a nice stubby chrome pipe to put on each side, like a turndown, Not much out there in this small of a pipe that is chrome though. 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

In a lot of public lands that's illegal. Down pointed exhaust is a viable way to spark a fire. Two of mine point down & forward at a 45⁰ angle. artfull dodger 435 #12 Posted January 12 I agree on them being a fire hazard being pointed straight down. Not my doing. I will point them 90' sideways and slightly angled forward when I get some shop time. To cold right now to mess in my shop much. Gonna be brutal cold in Indiana the next couple days. Hibernation weather! I will use a couple black iron 90' short elbows then a short piece of nipple to make them. I can tack weld them with my mig welder so they dont move or unscrew. I have some chrome sink drain pipe I might be able to sleeve over the nipple and hose clamp it to make it look a bit more dressed up. 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

pfrederi 18,082 #15 Posted January 13 The original mufflers aimed straight down however they were capped. and the nipple between the muffler and the cap had holes drilled in it. I used some B&S mufflers on my D aimed straight down... it left a few dead spots on the grass so i put nipples and caps on it with a bunch of 1/4" holes drilled in the outer third of the nipple just like the original. Paul brings up an excellent point. Having exhaust blow back at you is NOT good. My Cinnamon Horse C160-8 has a VERY tall stack. It's good for driving around. It is However... not that great for operation of the chipper shredder that lives on it. artfull dodger 435 #17 Posted January 13 (edited) Mine will point outwards at an angle so forwards and at an angle. Cant be worse that the IH cubs that exhausted straight out the grill. I just dont want it blowing straight down kicking up dust. Even the factory exhaust on the Onan on my 416h will get blown back at me sometimes. No big deal and it does not bother me. A wiff once and awhile lets me know how the engine is running by its scent. After 25+ years of wrenching on them professionally, I can tell when its lean, rich or starting to burn oil long before I see blue smoke. I never cared for the "pepper pot" pipe set up on the stock original mufflers. When I did stacks, I never had them at face level, to much exhaust in my face. I will take pics of my solution in a couple days. Gotta go to the hardware store as I dont have any elbows on hand. The idea is to keep her quiet as she is now. She is a throaty beast for sure. Especially when I throttle up, which I wasnt able to film. She does have a coil breaking down, I finally got it hot enough to shut down and I verified it does loose spark. So I will order one of the reproduction coils off Amazon. See how long it lasts. The one on the tractor looks original with how weathered the coil looks. My 4wd Polaris 500 Sportsman handles winter duties quickly. The Horse slumbers thru the winter months. Now I am on the clock to find a good mower deck and its needed running gear so I can cut grass in a couple more months. Then a cat 0 moldboard plow before any plow days happen.
