Charger 8 Dozer Blade Help

Recommended Posts

tstab

Hey everyone... I know I'm fresh to the forum.... I've been lurkkkkkking for a while.  I've been trying to figure out a solve for a Charger 8 plow.

That said I have a Charger 8 (diff motor) I got for free and I want to mount up a plow to it and was going to buy the aftermarket axle bracket.  I picked this plow/dozer blade up thinking it would work for it.  I know there is a specific model of dozer blade for the Commando 8 and I have the part number somewhere but I'm hoping with the bracket from Wheel Horse Parts.... I can make this work. Before I invest another bit of money into the bracket.. I wanted to see if that would work.

I know I'll have to figure out the lift mechanism probably too but more interested in getting this thing generally mounted if possible.

Thanks!

Tyler

That is a plow frame for a short frame tractor.     I am not positive, but I believe the charger is a long frame tractor.     You can still install it, but the blade may hit the tires if you angle the plow..

Thanks Ed,

I think that pushes me towards fabing up a custom axle bracket to push the setup forward a bit. Thats helpful .  Thanks for the help! If anyone else has any suggestions let me know!

The long plow frame is essentially a short frame with straight sides added behind the angle section.

It might be easier to extend the sides on your frame than to make a custom bracket.

Later today I can get a dimension of how long it needs to be.

Very easy to do if you can cut and drill steel.     I have made several custom axle brackets for tractors and 4 wheelers using 3"x3" angle iron.  I just drill a 3/4" hole and use 2 3/4" bolts and double buts to attach the plow.   No need to make notches and locking levers.    Place the plow under your tractor with the blade angled.  set it for a couple inches clearance with the tire. Then you can see what you would need to attach to the rear axle.

Here is what a hitch looks like mounted ahead of the axle housing. The A-frame mounts inside left and right brackets.

Suspect the one you have mounts under the axle housing.

Thanks for the walkthrough this will help me cut down on the thinking haha.  I've got some steel tube from a lift gate I repaired laying around that should work nicely.  I appreciate the time.

Make sure a front mount gains the front clearance you need.

The custom made  angle pieces can be mounted horizontally under the axle to move the frame forward.   Using a 3/4" drilled hole, the locking levers and the bar connecting the two brackets is not necessary.     100_0241.JPG.a7b5f421566e4a5abcbb271739b3d4b0.JPG  Here is a pic of the short and long plow frames.

Isn’t the Charger 8 a vertical shaft engine tractor?

If so, the transaxle is very different and I’m not at all sure it’s intended to support a plow bracket.

The brackets/frames for the horizontal shaft tractors won’t be compatible.

I’m fairly sure the dozer blade for the verticals attaches only to the frame at the front and mid-hitch.

That's what I noticed on the suggested blade.  Made this purchase as it was what was available and I assumed (incorrectly) that one of the Wheel Horse Parts brackets would work.  Def adds to the convo here though. I'm just going to have to go custom with it

The plow you have is probably from ’64-’67-ish (picture doesn’t show the back) and, with the missing parts replaced, work on lots of ’61 thru ‘’70-ish tractors. Now that you are a member, you can post an add in the Classifieds here to find it a home. On the other hand, if you are determined to build a custom frame, go for it and reuse as much as you can!

@tstab Well don’t you know I think I know where the correct frame is! I’m not exactly sure but I can check in the next couple days. I think my buddy has one in his shed! Again I’m not sure if it’s the exact one but I remember it has that short frame.

If it's a Charger V8 it has a square axle housing. He still may be able to build the axle bracket and make it work. Measure and see if it will work. Didn't the 4 speed vertical shafts use a Tecumseh transmission.

Is that a cast iron housing like the Uni-drives of the larger tractor?

I think the V’s used smaller rear wheels, so ground clearance might be a concern, too.

It is square for sure! It's the Eaton transmission
