Maynardb 9 #1 Posted January 8 Hi im restoring a Sububan 401 with a Lauson 5.5hp motor. It has a Wico alternator setup under the flywheel feeding a 2 diode rectifier setup. I don’t a battery for it yet, i started it up with the recoil start and measured the voltage coming out of the diodes. Out of one was 1.8 vdc and 1.5vdc from the other. I expected somewhere around 13.5 vdc across the diodes going to the battery but instead read around 3.3vdc which went up a little with higher rpm’s. If the alternator coils were open, wouldn’t it read 0 volts? What’s going on? Btw, I checked both diodes and they are good. thx
Maynardb 9 #2 Posted January 8 Does anyone have a schematic of the rectifier wiring so I can check it out? thx
Achto 28,082 #3 Posted January 8 Do you need a battery hooked up for the system to work?
953 nut 56,453 #4 Posted January 8 This manual has the wiring diagram for a 551 which is needed for this engine. I feel confident that your charging system will work WITH a battery.

Just spinning your wheels. There can be no current flow tests without it. You might be able to get some voltages without it but best to have it. Very common for the diodes to be bad but we fo have a fix. Sounds like yours are good. Just one of many ... search on Tecumseh Diode all words.
