Can you cut down a harness

Recommended Posts

Can you remove all the safety switches? Remove all the excess wires.

What about the relay? Whats it for?

1987 312-8.  Reason is circuit board is melted and dont want all the extra wires

We've had this come up in the past a few times.

It's certainly NOT recommended to remove the safety switches.

In reality it may be a lot easier to get a good used board and fix the harness correctly.

Much safer in the long run too.

I wouldn't think twice about it. Especially if you are the only operator. Got youngun operators maybe think about it first.

If we could walk into a WH dealer and buy a replacement whatever for reasonable I would consider that too.

I have a JD :hide: Z turn that is just loaded with safety crap like that. I would need a wiring diagram to nix them all but those are unobtanium unless you know someone who works at a deal and totes a lunch box.

The tractor will run without the circuit board. The board just monitors the status of the switches.

I have built a few harnesses for my customs.  They don’t hold much concern to safety.  See you in the bumps and bruises threads!  :orcs-cheers:

I believe that relay pictured is the engine kill relay. Leave that out and the engine won't shut off. Hi-Jinx will ensue!

Actually, that silver relay beside the start solenoid is the low oil relay that prevents the engine from cranking over if the oil level is low.

After building wire harnesses for the 520's that 312 harness is fairly straight forward.

If you follow the wires from the circuit board and just remove those then what is left will not be too bad to follow.

The 312 does not have too many safety switches, main ones are the clutch, PTO, oil level, and seat.

Here is the harness from my 312-8 with the warning circuit board wiring removed.

You will notice the seat switch wires are also removed.

That is because to mow steep hills and ditches I sometimes need my butt off the seat for stability.
