I noticed in the picture you have your axle flipped. Make your you CHECK all your club rules about everything you do like that. I know in our club flipping or spindles and or axles are not allowed.

I read the rules yesterday right after I did that and figured out that it isn’t allowed. lol

The question here is why?

A 3 or 4 speed has the same gear ratio as a 6 or 8 speed upper range.

If you're looking for durability:

I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND you stay away from any 6 speed or an 8 speed with Limited Slip Differential.

You'd think having Limited Slip would be good but for a PULLER in particular you REALLY need the extra strength of a mid 70s or later 8 speed with an open differential.

They are worlds apart for long term durability.

8 speed. 8 pinion. With 1 1/8" axles.

I believe anything from 1974 and up with that diameter axle would suit you.

Open diff. 8 speed. 1 1/8" axles. That's the one you want.

I started the year off with a '68 or '69 six speed tranny with a limited slip 10 pinion differential. This was end the results after my second pull. :(

I'm still running the same 6 speed tranny except I retro fit an open 8 pinion differential from a 520H tranny. This set up held up the rest of the season with no issues.:handgestures-thumbupright:

I’m picking up a parts tractor tomorrow, I think a c160, but I’ve never seen it so……. I might part it out but I’m giving my friend first picks. It will be listed on here to give you guys first picks on the rest. I’ll post pictures of it when I get it home.

A C160 is a VERY desirable model.

Literally a holy grail to some.

Consider carefully whether it should be parted or saved.

It has no engine and it’s been parted out a little, but my friend says he wants to save it. I’m giving him some parts to start with on his first :wh: journey.

I've decided I'm not going to be building a modified tractor because of money and time. My tractor will do fine (I think) in stock class when I get my adjustments made. I know this whole thing is confusing and probably boring. Tomorrow I will start to swap an 8speed into a commado. Great.......

Nothing wrong with that at all.

A build is a build no matter what type.

Learn from what you're doing. Discover your talents and skills and goals.

Learn and remember where your best parts sources are. IE the several great vendors here on Redsquare and/or your local sources like friends or club members,  or the stores that have what you want.

Perhaps the next build will be the more wild natured one. Or maybe you'll see another tractor  (like the C160 or something else)  that suits you better for multiple reasons.

It's all good.

I have to put off getting the c160 for now because I have higher priorities. I might get it within the next week. THIS IS STILL A PULLING TRACTOR BUILD

How do you get an oil pan off when they used rtv on it?

First, the safety disclaimer.

USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN HANDLING SHARP OBJECTS.

If it was my engine I'd consider using a series of tools including but not limited to.

A razor knife.

Small very sharp chisels.

Small putty knife.

I'd cut the groove of the RTV. Make sure you slice AWAY from your body.

There are reasons why engines are not assembled with RTV in the first place. Difficulty disassembling is one.

Squeeze out in the inside breaking off can affect in eternal oil circulation by blocking passageways or other critical places.
