A800 FAN 1 #1 Posted Friday at 12:55 PM Hello Wheel Horse friends. I recently "inherited" a Wheel Horse lawn tractor type A 800 Ranger. The tractor had been standing unused in a barn for over 20 years. I am very keen to restore the tractor. Unfortunately the type plate has been removed, so I don't have much information. It is a type A800, with a Briggs & Stratton engine. There is no number on the engine, but the inscription "Briggs & Stratton Magnetron" is visible on the engine. I suspect it is a 190434-xxx-xx engine. It would be great if someone could help me with the wiring plan or photos of the wiring. There is a green, a red and a black cable coming from the starter switch, which are no longer connected. The previous owner disconnected almost everything. Can someone help me? I already saw that the wiring with a Tecumseh engine is not the same as with a Briggs & Stratton engine. Thank you very much.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,121 #2 Posted Friday at 02:34 PM Welcome to Red Square. We do not have the wiring diagram for the A-800. Wonder how similar it is to the A-90 1

WHX?? 49,432 #5 Posted Friday at 07:52 PM Shouldn't be too difficult to figure out the wiring it's a pretty basic tractor. Then again i can talk smart wiring is my only strong suit. Pics might help abit ... the back of the ignition switch.

Then again i can talk smart wiring is my only strong suit. Pics might help abit ... the back of the ignition switch. Thank you for your response. I have taken a few photos of the electrics. There were 3 wires connected to the back of the ignition switch : 1 green, 1 red & 1 black (photo # 110453). The cables had been completely removed by the previous owner, presumably because they had melted through. I replaced the 3 cables on the ignition lock with 3 new ones (the 3 red ones - photo # 110510). Unfortunately, I don't know where to connect the other end of them. In my opinion, the black cable was connected to the cable that comes out from under the fuel tank and goes to the 2 switches to the clutch and the mower (photo # 110625). I would prefer to bypass these 2 switches anyway. However, I don't know where the blue cable in the same photo was connected. For the sake of completeness, I have also taken a photo of the solenoid, the starter and the ignition coil. I have not found a voltage regulator on the lawn tractor. I hope, someone could help me. Thank you !
WHX?? 49,432 #7 Posted Saturday at 02:35 PM (edited) Ok first thing is get one of these on order if you can. https://www.amazon.com/DVPARTS-Ignition-Connector-725-3026-925-3026/dp/B09FDYYSLC/ref=rtpb_d_sccl_2/144-0580377-3899262?pd_rd_w=vfoOH&content-id=amzn1.sym.ecc04cf7-51e4-4f3c-90a2-8bee4ffadf01&pf_rd_p=ecc04cf7-51e4-4f3c-90a2-8bee4ffadf01&pf_rd_r=0X7W7VG6W7P5R2GXZBF8&pd_rd_wg=mAEoO&pd_rd_r=b7db3fc0-c4cc-4b22-a8e4-59e605d599f7&pd_rd_i=B09FDYYSLC&psc=1 This will plug right on to the back of the ignition switch for a clean start. You will not be able to use the wiring diagram Garry graciously provided. That is for a battery/points system and you have a magneto ignition.@953 nut do you have one of your nice diagrams for magneto.? Next remove any and all traces of existing PO wiring molestation. You are going to want to start from scratch. Here is a diagram of the back of the switch. you are concerned with the magneto style on the right. Try and save this connector .. it will make things much easier. On the tractor side of the plug extend the wiring. I prefer what we call a western union splice with solder and shrink wrap. Google it good u tubes on doing it. Leave the wires plenty long. Correct me if I am wrong fellas but is that a diode I spy on the engine side? Never mind Richard I think this is it ... please verify... Now I could be dead nuts wrong here but I almost think that the red wire on the engine side of the plug is the charge wire and the white is the magneto. You will need to verify this. Most times standard on a Briggs I believe. Again triple check. Edited Saturday at 03:05 PM by WHX?? 1
WHX?? 49,432 #8 Posted Sunday at 12:40 AM On a side note ... very important ... The switch terminal designations on the switch diagram and the wiring diagram are not the same. Check yours for correct labeling. Cleaning the back of the switch up should reveal the letters. Also the some of the wire colors on the switch pigtail will likely not correspond with what is shown on the diagrams. It might be wise to check your existing switch for proper connections in all positions. Another important note is make sure 12 volts IS NOT applied to the M wire. You will let the smoke out of the Magneto and or wires. The M wire gets grounded when the switch is in off to kill the engine. TRIPLE CHECK ALL WIRING CONNECTIONS BEFORE APPLING POWER! 1

NO, That diagram is for a battery ignition system, don't use it @A800 FAN, please check you ignition switch and let us know if it matches the 103 991 switch shown. The diagram below is a basic wiring diagram for a magneto powered ignition system. The charging portion from your B&S may not be the same.
A800 FAN 1 #10 Posted Sunday at 01:13 PM Hello, Many thanks for your tips. I will check the ignition lock more closely in the next few days. In the meantime, I have already ordered a new wiring harness, delivery should take +/- 10 days. After that I will get back to you.
