Why did WH use a wider rear wheel on the 520?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know of a technical reason why the rear wheels on a 520 are wider? Just because of the 10.5 wide tire?

Were there any other models that used a 10.5 wide?

They:

1.  looked cool

2.  helped justify the higher price

3.  permitted bragging to neighbors

4.  handled the higher horsepower

5.  gave better weight distribution (weight boxes/FELs, lifted 60” deck, overweight operators, loaded tires, etc.)

:hide:

The 518 also had them, but the 516 did not. 420 LSE anyone?

Not all 520's had them the 1988 and 1989 didn't have them. The main reason was the 23x1050x12 tires, but they were using 2 ply tires and they rounded up like a beach ball on the 7" rims.

Some of the gray Work Horses had 8 1/2" rims. I put 24x950x12 on my 1989 520-H on the 7" rims. The receiver braces down to the hitch pin had not been added in this picture.

Here is one of the braces, they are not welded to the hitch.

23x1050x12 tires

I have at least two tractors with the 10.5 wide tires and none of mine have the wider rims.

I'm scheduled to pick up a set in the next few weeks. Not sure what I'll use them for yet. I may look at some 24 x 12 x 12 just for kicks to see what's out there.

I'll just point out that a 520-H with 10.5’s and swept axle is ~42” wide at both ends. This compared to ~32” for my 854 with its stock-size tires (4.8 x 8 and 6-12)

42” wide

Makes sense considering that's the width of my two C Series with wide tires and wheel spacers.

WH used 10.5 inch rims on the D series when they had 26x12x12 tires.  These are Carlisle 26x12x12 (so I assume they are full size)  they look about right on the 10.5 rims would think they would look very bulgy on 8.5s

You may be right about that.

It occurs to me that BOTH of the sets I have are FLUID filled,  not air filled.

No air pressure in them at all.

420-LSE has the   23 x 10.50 - 12 also.  I have a real nice extra set of of those painted wheels waiting for something to put them on .  Maybe one of the 400 Series ?

I have two new sets of BKT TR315 Trencher 23x1050x12s here for future projects.

They might land on my wide wheels for forestry usage.

Here's the link to my post about the tires.

They are clearly a deeper more aggressive tread than the Carlisle Tru Power.

I think the wider wheels were to more closely match the track of the wider front axle. In addition the wider overall track made the machine look considerably larger.

During the years of the 520-H production, everything was larger. Cars, trucks, everything. It was an easy way to make these tractors seem more substantial.

I believe the Work Horse GT-1800 was the first to come with 23x10.50-12’s The GT-1600 came with 8.50’s Other than that the largest tire on the C-Series was a 23x9.50-12 that came on a C-175. Let’s look at some pictures, I know you guys like pictures! Note: The C-175 in these pictures has 10.50’s on it. The  420-LSE came from the factory with 10.50’s

Damn it! Right after I posted that I remembered the Super C, The C-195! Then I wondered how long it would take for someone to catch that, and here we go! But…. They are still 9.5’s not 10.5’s!

I love the look of fat tires on these Wheelhorses. They make the tractor look sturdy.
