fourwheelhorseman 349 #1 Posted December 31, 2024 (edited) I have my k341 on my bench with rod and piston removed. All looks good. When I turn the engine over by hand with flywheel on it, it makes a knocking noise.. is this odd? It’s been a long time since I’ve been into a kohler engine.. especially this far. I removed the crankcase plate, flywheel and stator. Then replaced all when I decided I was going to rebuild it. Attached is the noise… it’s in correlation with the cam and valves. RED-Z06 2,353 #2 Posted December 31, 2024 Probably the lifters/valves running up and down the cam lobes

rmaynard 15,766 #5 Posted December 31, 2024 I'm thinkin that it is the lifter on the exhaust valve contacting the ACR. Remove the exhaust valve and lifter an see if it goes away. When running at normal speed it should go away.
953 nut 56,391 #6 Posted December 31, 2024 If you were thinking of reassembling the engine without removing the cam, lifters, governor, and valves I would caution you against it. Little fragments of your rod or piston could ben lurking up there that will come back to ruin your work. Thoroughly clean and inspect everything before putting it back together.
fourwheelhorseman 349 #7 Posted December 31, 2024 I do think it’s the cam/ valves/ACR making the noise. Thanks guys!

fourwheelhorseman 349 #9 Posted January 1 Well I took the crank cover off and cleaned the bearing, it had flecks of rod skirt in it. I also cleaned the other bearing on the opposite side. It had nothing. Now the crank spins perfectly free. I also inspected and cleaned the cam area and lifters.. I think it’s ready to be put back together, just waiting on rod, piston, rings and oil pan gasket. I’ll most likely plane the head while I’m waiting.
fourwheelhorseman 349 #10 Posted January 13 (edited) Well, it’s all back together, I was able to use a standard piston and rod. I took it all apart and cleaned it all up, with the exceptionnof the governor. Then I hand lapped the valves, planed the head and installed a new head gasket. I’m hoping it doesn’t fly apart whenni fire it up. I couldn’t locate my assembly lube , so I used good clean oil instead. It’s all on the tractor now, waiting for me to install the battery and add gas. I also installed a new rubber grommet for the gas tank, new filter and fuel lines. I plan on firing it up after work.. this is the first one I’ve rebuilt in 25+ years.. wish me luck! Edited January 13 by fourwheelhorseman 2
fourwheelhorseman 349 #11 Posted Monday at 01:19 PM (edited) Hey all, I thought I’d touch base with you guys. It was a normal noise nothing to be worried about. It had been a while since I was that deep into a kohler k series. I posted a video of it running on my other thread “Well Back to Square One” Thanks for all your help!
