Repairing PTO clutch (wheelhorse xl380h)

Recommended Posts

Hello Toro community,

I have had white smoke 100% coming from the clutch and the blades struggle to turn on grass even though spindles have been replaced with new sharpened blades. Clutch taken apart, not sure if the problem is one of the bearings or the friction disc (please see pictures). When turning the clutch is it supposed to make a grinding sound like this or spin freely (please see video)? It's a warner clutch.

I greatly appreciate all your help.

Welcome to Red Square

The "friction disc" is just steel on steel so I doubt that is your issue.  Most likely the Inner or outer bearing is bad.

There were two different inner (large) bearings.  The older one that has an extended inner race is NLA...but You can use some spacers to address the difference,  see this thread for info

WHX??

Check the spindle bearings and any and all pullies in the deck drive line. they should all spin freely. This would narrow the problem down to the clutch. Check that the clutch is getting full voltage and well grounded.

While bearings may be replaced in the clutch it's sometimes best just to replace it.

Replacement is $$$$

It's odd ... some are some aren't.

I bought a Toro one once for a vertical $284. They have one for $155.

Fine if his bearings don't have square balls. Even with the best of lube bearings are still made to wear out.

The bearing is working only when the pto is off. It allows one half to rotate with the motor and the other half is the stationary pto mount.

Power is transferred from the engine half to the mounting half via the 6 straps.

Thank you for your replies. I'd much rather get a new unit though I'm not from the US and getting the part over here will be very expensive as there are no distributors here (Australia) costing around 600AUD minimum to get one.

I will try replace the inner bearing using one of these 6205 bearings, the video below says its a 6205 for his John Deere clutch but im not sure if it's the right size for my Warner?

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/305989376418?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=705-154756-20017-0&ssspo=dg7ooet_rf6&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=sRycvrPJRG6&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

They use a bench vise to press it in like this video:
