Brockport Bill 1,733 #1 Posted December 27, 2024 the snow blower model # 79360 is single stage tall chute likely from 1990's -- diagrams show auger bearing Number 101480 - - does anyone know the actual bearing number imprinted on the bearing itself so I can check availability online? thanks

ri702bill 8,550 #3 Posted December 28, 2024 Those spec's and the 1515 P/N are the same as the impeller shaft bearing on an old Ariens 10000 series Sno Thro !! Choose wisely - should be available as either double shielded or double sealed (preferred???)

ri702bill 8,550 #5 Posted December 28, 2024 OK - Bearing "seals" are used to keep moisture and contaminants out of the working area of the bearing. Usually both sides are the same. Open bearings have no protective covers, are very free running with next to no drag. Not for external use where dirt is a problem. Must be adequately lubricated. Shielded bearings have a 2-piece shroud that do not touch each other. Not as good as a sealed bearing for keeping dirt out and grease in, but they run cooler with very little drag. Sealed bearings have a pressed in disc that is fixed to usually the outer race and does contact the inner race to keep dirt out. (This is the type you probably have.) Because of the that contact, there is a slight drag, and they tend to run hotter than the other 2 styles. These are very common. Single vs. Double "seals" - Some bearings are available with only one side protected, the other side open. That is the single shield or single seal type and are rare. Those must be installed correctly! Look at McMaster Carr's website regarding ball bearing types & construction.
peter lena 8,822 #6 Posted December 28, 2024 @Brockport Bill looking at that bearing , thats exactly the type / style you want ! always try to get those , small , flat putty knife , very thin square edge , easily removes those seals , WHAT COULD YOU POSSIBLY DO ? thats a ceiling fan type of bearing , never properly lubricated , for heat stress and / or lateral loading , the bearing whine noise is telling you of lubrication failure . none of my drives , or related mule drive , same bearing , have that noise , often state how easily , my mule drive , down belt area , moves the attachment , ISN,T THAT WHAT YOU WANT ? easy to remove both seals , wipe out , carb cleaner , repack to same ammount , lucas XTRA HD GREEN CHASSIS GREASE , here is the scary part 550 temp drop point / polyurea rated , stays with bearing . why would you change an unknown lube , for a higher rating ? none of my rotational anything , whine's , or makes my pto drive squeal , what am I doing wrong ? / ? . this ain't rocket science . dare to make an improvement , change , pete
