Sparky-(Admin) 21,489 #1 Posted December 25, 2024 Bought this 42” RD this fall, only used it twice and it seems to be eating the belt. Investigating I have discovered that all the pulleys are severely corroded and the belt groves are shot. I think the rough surface is destroying the belt. Spindles run quiet though. Never removed this type of pulley before, they aren’t cast so I can only assume a 3 jaw puller would bend em up. Any tricks?
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,121 #2 Posted December 25, 2024 Will a General Motors power steering pulley puller work? A collar locks into the groove at the top. https://www.princessauto.com/en/gm-power-steering-pump-pulley-puller/product/PA0009065061 3
kpinnc 12,743 #3 Posted December 25, 2024 My FIL destroyed one of those pulleys. Heat, kroil, pullers, nothing worked. The other two dropped out when he removed the retaining nuts. The good thing I guess is they are all standard sized, so even aftermarket pulleys Will work.

Bill D 1,991 #5 Posted December 25, 2024 Soak with penetrating oil, then heat. Hold the collar on the pulley with vice grips or a pipe wrench. Use an impact gun drive the shaft from the underside. Only works on metric shaft pulleys and decks without a key.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,121 #6 Posted December 25, 2024 Nylon insert in nut as shown means there should be a key. Regular nut plus a regular spring lock washer no key.
squonk 41,604 #7 Posted December 25, 2024 Since the pulleys are shot. Slice them! 1

Sparky-(Admin) 21,489 #9 Posted December 25, 2024 Long story short…this deck cuts well and the spindles are quiet, but these nasty pulleys are destroying the belt. Decided to try and clean up the pulleys. First I chisled off the large chunks of rust, then did some heavy wire wheeling. They seem to be ok now. Will know better when I order a new deck/spindle belt and probably a new idler pulley ( @76c12091520h ) for it and spin it up. 3
squonk 41,604 #10 Posted December 25, 2024 That one looks a bit nasty.

peter lena 8,822 #15 Posted December 25, 2024 @Sparky those decks are cake to refit , those pulleys easily remove with 2 WONDER BAR , pry bars , NEVER USE A PULLER ON A PULLEY ! been trying to find my write up on that , done years ago , there are bolts under the pulleys , remove top pulley nut , use 2 wonder bars , 90 deg bend , under pulley , sitting on TOP OF DECK BOLT , and up against pulley center mount , strongest point of angular advantage, push pry bars OUTWARD ,AWAY from pulley , lifts right up , also a great time to re fit new bearings , with lucas 550 drop point green chassis grease , have 3 decks with this set up , no noise or failures . notice thin space of pulley to deck bolt ? thats your wonder bar leverage advantage, pulleys lift right off , no damage . pete

peter lena 8,822 #17 Posted December 26, 2024 @Sparky my decks are all rebuilt , been solid / quiet for years , not only did the top side , but have been doing this for years also , all three , also kook like this , over winter , thats how you preserve , your work , propped up to wall, with screw in eye bolt , wide S hook , 5/16 steel to heavy extension spring , that hot sun lubrication bake in , is a permanent part of rustproofing , no whining noise, belts are solid and no fraying , spindles are lucas 550 deg quiet / smooth , pete 1
Brockport Bill 1,733 #18 Posted December 26, 2024 i had started a similar thread last year asking for help to remove frozen pulleys on a 42 rd deck left out in weather that i obtained and wanted to rescue and rehab - - i tried every suggestion made from R Sq members - penetrating oil for a week - heat - pry bars etc -- nothing worked thus only solution left was cutting off - - see photo... Certainly frustrating having to buy 2 new pulleys but the end result was a nice rehabbed deck should last for years - - good luck 1
Sparky-(Admin) 21,489 #19 Posted December 26, 2024 You can see on the idler pulley mounting bar how much it was jumping by the shiny section. After cleaning up all the pulleys it’s riding so much nicer! Still going to get a new belt and replace the idler, it’s just a bit noisy, before she goes back into service
