Maynardb 9 #1 Posted December 22, 2024 (edited) I’m rebuilding a 5003/5010 trans and the final drive set are quite scored up but no missing teeth. Do you think I can still use them ? Also, since parts for these are limited, will a uni-drive ( 2 piece case) final gear set work in an earlier 3 piece case? thx Edited December 22, 2024 by Maynardb Picture
Ed Kennell 39,289 #2 Posted December 22, 2024 I can't help with your tranny questions, but maybe our tranny Guru @stevasaurus will help.

He also sells on E bay @ Jakes-Small-Engine
stevasaurus 22,914 #4 Posted December 22, 2024 What do you mean by "final drive" set?? Yes, some parts in the 2 piece tranys will work in the 3 piece tranys. The beat way to find out is to look at the parts list for the 5003 & 5010 and compare it to the parts list for the 5025. The differential and the mushroom will not interchange, but the spyder gears in both kinds of trans will...as long as you change all 4. I know the cluster gear will work, and I believe the pinion and the reduction gear will also...the cluster gear shaft is a maybe without checking the parts list. Check these parts to be sure...input shaft, splined shaft, fork gears (2), and pinion. Those have a good chance of interchanging. The reverse gear is the same. Not sure about the shift rails, check parts list. I do talk about what does work from a 5025 to a 5003 or 5010 in this thread...

I have seen (and used) far worse with no issues. The tranny on my 701 looks so bad by comparison that I may have to replace several gears. I’ve honestly been a little afraid to even start on it until later, but I assure you that some gears will look far worse than yours. oliver2-44 9,929 #6 Posted December 23, 2024 For a show and neighborhood cruiser those gears will be excellent. I've got a rebuilt 5010 with gears that look a lot worse. take a file or sand paper wrapped around a piece of flat steel and gently take any high burrs of the teeth. But don't try to file them smooth, just remove LITTLE high spots. 3
squonk 41,676 #7 Posted December 23, 2024 (edited) The worse thing those gears would cause would be noise. Especially if you swap pulleys around to go faster than what they were intended to. Edited December 23, 2024 by squonk
stevasaurus 22,914 #8 Posted December 23, 2024 Those gears are fine. Concerning wear and noise, when you put your 90w oil back in, add about 1/2 qt of Lucus Oil Treatment. It is like adding some STP only better. The trans will take about 1 1/2qt of 90w. Fill until oil starts to come out the fill plug on the left side, close and then add the 1/2qt of Lucus. 3
