Alrashid2 286 #1 Posted Wednesday at 07:58 PM Hey guys, I have a 1985 312-8 and am just thinking ahead. I notice that, with clutch disengaged and belt not moving (only drive pulley spinning on engine), no odd noises, but as soon as I let off the clutch pedal and all 3 pulleys are spinning, I get a humming / light whining sound. My thought was that means it's either the idler/clutch pulley, or the transaxle drive pulley. I found a replacement for the idler pulley online for cheap, but can't find any source for the transaxle pulley - my manual says its Part # 106165, but not sure if the manual is for my exact year and if that matters. Anyone know of a source for that pulley? And any instructions out there on how to replace? Do the pulleys contain the bearing or is the bearing a separate part I should replace? Also, am I wrong here and maybe it's just the transaxle insides themselves spinning while sitting idling out of gear? Just thinking ahead as I know usually noises like that don't go away on their own and only get worst... thanks all Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
8ntruck 7,079 #2 Posted Wednesday at 09:06 PM My first thought would be the idler pulley. You should be able to pull the belt guard and be able to get to the idler enough to push and pull on the pulley to check it for play in the bearing. The drive pulley on the trans should have a set screw and a key to hold it to the input shaft. If you are getting noise there, it will be bearings or something else in side the Trans. I've had the set screw come loose on that pulley, causing it to slide on the shaft and start rubbing on the belt guard, making a rubbing sound. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
