I would be inclined to put as little $ as posable into it and pass it on to a new owner.

I would invest zero $.    Just haul it to the scrapper and collect my $300.

That engine isn't Kia's best effort.  Four coworkers have/had Kias with that engine.  Three have had replacement engines installed.

Even being a freebie I think you might have paid too much. :)

I read some of the horror stories online.  Thanks for that rabbit hole   At 200k on the ticker, I wonder if it’s been replaced, or if the rods are still doing what they’re supposed to be doing!

Indeed. If there is someone who thinks it a good idea to take that thing off your hands for $3,800 go ahead and make their day!

Could I call it a "drone" and get around the Michigan law?

I wouldn't try it. I heard about a guy last year who got in a lot of trouble in Michigan for using drones to help locate deer that had already been shot. Apparently "hunting deer" with a drone is very illegal there, and the Michigan Game Commission considered that "hunting".

Seems like statistically there would be good ones and bad ones.  That one very well could be reliable for years.

all three of my coworkers had no warning the engine would fail.  For each of them it came from out of the blue.  One of them had remote started his car and was walking toward it to get in and he said it started sounding like gravel going through a garbage disposal and it just clunked to a halt, spilling its oil on his driveway when the rod came through the block.

another was half way home from Indianapolis when the car started thumping real bad.  Again, broken rod.

The last was driving home from work and it just exploded.

The first one died when the car was still under extended warranty.  The other two were out of regular warranty but Kia ended up covering both of them after a fight.  Apparently now it’s so well known they cover it en masse.

Amazingly, two of these people bought Kias to replace their cars after the repaired blown engines.  one bought a K5, the other a Niro. The K5 turned out to be a lemon so he kept it only about two years and traded it for a Durango.  The Niro spent 6 months in the shop when the onboard charger - it’s a PHEV - blew a fuse but the dealer and Kia couldn’t diagnose.

Most people love their Kias and they’re decent cars.  But people in my circle have bad luck…I’m likely the cause.

Actually, the people in your circle don't have bad luck, they have Kias. They aren't actually really all that great. They aren't the total garbage they were in the 90s, but aside from BMW-involved Toyotas Hyundai/Kia vehicles are the least reliable Japanese cars in my experience.

Lotsa issues w/Kia & Hyundai engines. I briefly worked at Hyundai dealership. We stocked replacement engines for multiple models. That says it all.

Yeah…I was trying to be politically correct.

One of my neighbors in Indiana had a Borrego.  His vehicle was trouble free, so they CAN do it.

btw, they’re actually Korean cars.

My wife is currently shopping for a new/er car.  I may not quote her 100% accurately, but when we were talking about what she’s going to look for she asked, “So, do you still have that axe to grind about Hyundai and Kia, or are they on the table?”

She gets me (God help her).

In fairness, I see a ton of Kias around here on the road.  I don’t know what the incidence of seeing them broken down on the side of the road is, but it’s got to be minuscule or the shoulder would be littered with them.

They’re just not for us.  It will probably be another Honda or Ford…

You got me on the nation of origin, they are Korean. In fact "Kia" is the Korean word for "from Asia".

Hondas are good, talk to me before buying any Ford and I'll give you the good and bad from a technican's point of view.

Outside of a few now-older Fords I kind of expect my next vehicle might be a Subaru.

Funny you should say that; the Outback was initially top of her list.  She still needs to drive one to check it out.

Apparently the Subie head gasket thing is largely a thing of the past.   They’re otherwise solid and have a cult following.  I love them because of they remind me of my childhood dream car, the AMC Eagle wagon.

This is the final model year for the station wagon body for the Outback so it’s now or never.   Makes me wish Volvo was still under the Ford umbrella rather than under Geely’s.

If we come back around to Fords, I’ll definitely pick your brain!  So far it’s just the Bronco Sport (3-cyl) on that list, but I don’t think it’s gonna be “the one” as it has some shortcomings for us.

sorry for the thread hijack @Pullstart

Don't buy the 3-cylinder Bronco Sport. I would never, ever own something with that engine on purpose. The non-turbo 4-cyl has a better power to weight ratio. The 1.5 has no guts, cylinder deactivation (turning it into a 2-cylinder) and cooling system issues.

You just don't see 10+yr old KIAs & Hyundais on the road (at least where i live) like you do Hondas & Toyotas. Even now Honda is having turbo issues with their 1.5T & Toyota also having engine issues with their trucks w/turbo engines. There's no excuse for vehicles to have issues for the price they are asking. Owned over 100+ vehicles over last 48+yrs primarily domestic brands. Worst vehicle I owned was a Toyota,  2nd worse- Nissan.

When I finally settled on a truck I ended up with a used Colorado.  I'm typically skeptical of buying used vehicles. 2016 w/30k miles. Owned by an older guy. Basic truck is what I wanted, no turbos, leather, & all the other stuff that goes bad eventually. 4cyl gets 24mpg & truck is 4wd.

Bought my Focus new in 2018. 130k later & all I've done is brakes, tires & battery. 40+mpg so it's great for driving to & from work.

2.7T in my Cadillac CT4 I guess will have to see how it holds up. I don't  really drive it much & I usually don't keep my Cadillacs much beyond 4-5yrs. Owned 9 Cadillacs & every one of them were good vehicles.

Although I'm gladly no longer in car business (25yrs was enough) I still have many friends that are.  They call KIA & Hyundai the Temu of automobiles! 😆
