Bill D 1,991 #1 Posted December 8, 2024 (edited) Does anyone know if the Onan 166-0785 ignition module has been discontinued? Says temporary out of stock on the Cummins website. I've got two Onans, so I'm a little concerned that's this parts gone for good. Thanks. Edited December 11, 2024 by Bill D
lynnmor 7,361 #2 Posted December 8, 2024 There is still a number of suppliers of the part, but it may be time to worry, many parts are being discontinued. There is a guy from Michigan that sells a complete ignition kit of aftermarket parts, he shows up on eBay from time to time. Since the real Onan part fails all too often, I will try the knock-offs next time, maybe they are better.

I've grown to like the the Onans I have and may have a chance to pickup another one. I sent an email to Pertronix about supplying a replacement module. We'll see how that goes.
Bill D 1,991 #4 Posted December 10, 2024 Update: I spoke to customer service at Cummins. The 166-0785 ignition module has been on back order for 75 days from their supplier, however the part number still shows as good in their system. Not looking good there. Pertronix is still in the process of moving their operations from California to Kansas and are not currently developing any new products. I asked the customer service tech if he could submit a request to management to develop a product for these engines. Doesn't sound like that's going to happen any time soon. Looks like the aftermarket kits from eBay are the best bet for now unless some supplier still has NOS parts. I may look at the Brian Miller site and see if the electronic ignition kits he built for the KT 17 and K series singles could be adapted. Any of you electronic wizards have any ideas? Since this part is failure prone maybe something better could be built using Pertronix or GM parts and mounted in a cooler location. Thoughts?

Bill D 1,991 #9 Posted December 14, 2024 (edited) Update: Looks like the aftermarket kit from eBay is the only option right now. I emailed Pertronix to see if they offered an ignition module kit to replace the 166-0785 ignition module. They did at one point in time, until Cummins threatened to sue them. If the Cummins part goes NLA then maybe they can offer a kit again. Edited December 18, 2024 by Bill D
