Canoetom85 21 #1 Posted December 4, 2024 Hi all, looking for some help regarding my clutch pad - can anyone tell me based off this picture if it needs replacing or should I just adjust Trunion more? Also if replacement is needed any suggestions on where to get one. I see amazon has some that match the original part number but no reviews on them. Thank you! oliver2-44 10,299 #2 Posted December 4, 2024 From the picture there appears to be enough clutch surface. However I suggest you remove the hoop and slide the clutch off. Then you can make sure you’re not close to riding on the clutch brass rivets. It’s also an excellent opportunity to clean/wipe the inner bearing out with a very clean rag and regrease. Don’t put too much grease or it will sling it out onto the clutch. If needed you can get a new quality clutch from Wheel Horse Parts and More.
Canoetom85 21 #3 Posted December 4, 2024 Awesome thank you I wasn’t sure as the trunion adjustment was close to the end of the threaded area. Also any idea what this is for? Is there supposed to be something attached to this? (Circled in red)

ri702bill 8,933 #8 Posted December 4, 2024 A LOT of folks ditch the brake pad - easier to service the PTO without it. And the airgap needs to be set each time it is re-installed - that is why the bracket is slotted.
Ed Kennell 40,373 #9 Posted December 4, 2024 2 hours ago, peter lena said: hitch pin clip on pto cone drive is missing Yep. pete's eyes are still good. Put that pin in and remove the brake bracket. Readjust the trunnion tension.
peter lena 9,074 #11 Posted December 4, 2024 @Ed Kennell @oldlineman also added a light extension spring from round spring corner to the lower swing arm mount slide pin clip , that light pull , stops the bouncing / buzzing around , have that on my 3 units , quiet . pete
oldlineman 1,494 #12 Posted December 4, 2024 I also have that spring on mine
peter lena 9,074 #13 Posted December 4, 2024 @oldlineman watch out on that admission ! usually get a , you can't do that , to any referred improvement . like to tweak anything that I detail function on . usually a small reference to solid smooth linkage areas . thanks for the shout , pete
peter lena 9,074 #14 Posted December 5, 2024 @ri702bill have also long removed my clutch brake pad set up , thought the set up only increased the trouble spot , also since going over to a 550 deg flash point grease , in every related movement point , including inner cone needle bearing , the movement / spin ease , is silent / smooth , if you looked at it , would not even notice the pad removal , but would notice the silent , rotational running ease . combine that with some , PTO LEVER start detailing , like eliminating sloppy start point . next to battery tray , also added the dreaded , heim joint, at lever end to clutch engagement point , no noise , no rust , just smooth quiet engagement . been road testing it for years now , with no issues , on 3 horses , pete
Lee1977 7,020 #15 Posted December 5, 2024 (edited) There is one more thing to check while you in there. The short shaft in the end of the PTO pulley has a C-clip on the out side if it come out of the groove you won't be able to keep it adjusted. There is another inside C-clip but I've never had any trouble with it. I have had to replace that short shaft a couple of times in the last 47 years when they get worn to the point a C-clip won't stay in. Don't know when they changed the PTO pads or what model you have, but the later ones are glued on you may not have rivets Edited December 5, 2024 by Lee1977
