Retired Wrencher 5,469 #1 Posted November 24 I have this RAT 1056 been working on it for couple of years. Making it better tractor than when it pick it up. It is my winter or summer plow tractor. 1. I changed the points and condenser. 2.Had two rebuilt carbs on it. 3. It runs but it acts like it is cold blooded. 4. It runs well at a high ideal. 5. If you rush it before it worms up it back fires and stalls.6. I have run it at 2 to 4 minutes before working it. Any advice will be helpful.
953 nut 55,389 #2 Posted November 24 If an engine idles well, but runs erratically when revved up, like it hits and misses, pops and backfires, then chances are, it needs a new condenser/capacitor. And always install a condenser/capacitor with the wire facing downward so rain water and/or when washing off engine, water will not enter inside condenser/capacitor, ruining it. With water inside the condenser, this will also allow it to idle well, but cause it to run erratically when revved up. The Kohler 230722 Condenser fits all battery ignition single cylinder and twin cylinder from the K-90 to the K-582.

If you disconnect the wire from the condenser to the coil and run the engine and symptoms go away then it is the condenser for sure.

I have run it at 2 to 4 minutes before working it. What is the behavior of this engine after it warms up? At this particular point in time I have two Kohler big block engines that run drive and work for us. They are both mid-70s K341. Temperamentally they are very different in cool or cold weather. Retired Wrencher 5,469 #7 Posted November 27 Eric it likes the higher rpm even when it warming up. I have tried both of carbs you have done same result. New points and condenser. It takes a good 2 minutes before I move it. Slowly move choke in.If you do this to fast it starts to sputter and stall. The other day though moving the trailer into the garage for hub work it worked well. I am getting bearings for the hubs today when that is done. I will get back to the 1056.
ebinmaine 67,760 #8 Posted November 27 Have you tried a SECOND condenser? Does the 1056 run okay AFTER it's warmed up?
Retired Wrencher 5,469 #9 Posted November 28 (edited) Warmed up it runs ok. This is my rat ride for the winter.I will try another condenser. I have never had a new kohler part go bad. Edited November 28 by Retired Wrencher

My own K341 on the Cinnamon Horse C160-8 is VERY temperamental when cold. I let it run for 2 to 4 minutes before usage. Longer in the winter. These are carbureted engines with several different types of metals. They need to acclimate from cold to operating temperature. IMHO you have no problem. Retired Wrencher 5,469 #11 Posted November 28 (edited) Thanks Eric it does seem to run ok when warm not like a rase car but ok. I only use it for plow my short drive way after blowing it.. I am real busy now with the trailer I bought last week. Edited November 28 by Retired Wrencher
