JP56 38 #1 Posted November 14 Went to put in a new feeder wire for the tail light & head lights on my 74 C-100 & found the black 2 wire plug on the Rectifier/Regulator was fried so bad it melted into the contacts on one of the 2 wires going to the engine. Any ideas as to what may have cased this? The wire connector on one of them was so badly encased I had to cut the end off it. Looking at the condition of the 2 wires to the engine, I can see what looks to be some heat shrink over what may be bullet connectors wrapped with electrical tape, just above the flywheel backing/plate at the top over the starter. Not sure if what I am looking at is OEM connections there, or if the prior owner did some kind of repair at the engine end of the 2 wires. Any way of testing the Rectifier/Regulator while off the tractor to see if I need to replace it at the same time when I check what's under the tape, & replace the 2 wires coming from the engine end of the two wires back to the Rectifier/Regulator since the connector ends got screwed up & need replacing anyway? My regulator looks like this one, except mine just has a 2 prong single plug connector for the 2 AC prongs & a separate single wire going to the B+ terminal instead of a single L shaped 3 prong connector on the end of the wires. Shape 26 #2 Posted November 14 KOHLER MAKES A RECTIFIER/REGULATOR CHECKER BOX THAT YOU CAN CHECK IT OFF THE MACHINE, WORKS BETTER GOOD. I MOST OF TIME JUST CHECK ON MACHINE. I'VE NOT SEEN A REGULATOR LIKE YOUR TALKING ABOUT, BUT I'VE NOT SEEN THEM ALL. CHECK YOUR STATOR MAKE SURE NOT SHORTED OUT AND WITH MOTOR RUNNING IT SHOULD PUT OUT 28 TO 38 VOLTS AC. HOOK UP YOUR REGULATOR WITH IT GROUNDED YOU SHOULD GET ABOUT 13 TO 14.5 VOLTS DC. IF CONNECTORS ARE BURNED UP THEY ARE ARKING AND NOT CONNECTED GOOD AND OVER HEATING 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

953 nut 55,203 #5 Posted November 15 Section 8; pages 13 and 14 of this manual give guidance for testing the 15 amp charging system on your tractor. The plug that connects to the regulator should have been a one piece unit with the two engine stator wires and the wire that goes to your ignition switch. The rectifier/regulator is mounted in the center stack near the bottom with 2 nuts & bolts to an angled metal plate, bent out from the stack for air flow. Below the rectifier is the Amp meter bolted into it on the same metal plate which is bolted into the stack with another 2 nuts & bolts. All four bots were super tight & difficult to crack loose to remove the plate assembly, so I don't know how else I can ground it & it was all metal on metal so.... This bears repeating.
