Haven't seen one of those in use in years.  Several townships around here have one out front of their garage with the Twp name on it...

Yep. 

Same here. There's a few collectors or dealers that still sell them once in a while but I don't know of any municipality or even private party that uses one on the road anymore.

I've only gotten up to 13 or 15 gears but my father drove a 24 many many moons ago on rare occasion.

 

The trucks that were built to move these giant plows originally would have had anywhere between 16 and 24 gears.

At the time I was working there, Case IH was selling a tractor with 40 gears. Rode it at their proving ground but wasn’t allowed to drive it. Kinda seemed like overkill to me but the demonstrator explained how important being able to match speed/power to each implement and conditions was critical to efficient farming.

That’s how I learned how to drive a 10-wheeler. A 1970 L9000 with a Caterpillar and a 5+4 speed. Yes two sticks,20 gears, but you really didn’t need all of them. Maybe if the truck was loaded with dirt and we were pulling the bulldozer on the tag trailer. I learned how to skip gears in that truck when it was empty. I was only 18 years old doing that, don’t see any 18 year old kids doing that anymore!!

A college buddy started driving quarry trucks for his Dad at 16. He thought it was fun for at least the first couple of weeks.

I have rare occasion that I miss "runnin up through the gears"  but I have to admit I'm getting a tad wee bit spoiled by the modern fully automatic trucks.

I've never driven a Twin stick. Love to.  But never tried.  

I've seen several Twins that had an extra lever with it like a splitter or an Overdrive.  

 

 

Up at Owl's Head Transportation Museum one year there was a Land Roverish SUV that had a couple auxiliary transmissions along with the original and a four wheel drive transfer case. 

Low/ Low/ Low/ Low/ Low/ Low/ Low/ Low/  blah blah blah what ever it was had a division so steep the owner didn't use the clutch to put it in gear. 

5 sticks?  Maybe 6?

friend of mine owns an excavating business and ordered a large item - so an 18 wheeler recently pulled the truck into his property with the item and out climbed from the tractor a young girl in her 20s -- so my friend had chat with her -- she's making over $100,000 per yr while many of her friends and former school mates who went to college make half that annual $$ and have huge college debt -- Amazing how the world turns?????????
