1952 Ferguson te-20 knock

It is a while since I have been on the forum.

All the Horses are doing well. Getting ready to paint the rims on de c141 Diesel project.

But I have been spending a lot of time in my Ferguson te-20 with a Perkins p3 diesel engine.

It has a knock ever since I bought it a good year ago now. The engine runs good and doesn't smoke.  oil pressure is strong, rod bearings are tight, no metal shaving in the oil. 

Pulled the head, everything looks in good condition, flat tappets, camshaft. cant rock the pistons in the liners and the liners are in great shape. The valvesprings do seem weak. I can move the valves down with one hand. 

It only knocks when hot and at the higher rpm range.

Anyone an idea what this could be?

I've never heard or seen a  Ferguson of that vintage with a diesel in the US.  I wonder if that was a European Model only.

Yes it was,  and it is a rare engine in Europe as well. Its terrible to find parts for it.

My dad has a massey ferguson 35 with a perkins diesel. It kind of knocks like that at high RPM, but I'm pretty sure that's just how they sound. I do hear your valves chattering pretty good. Did you check your valve lash to see if that was in spec?

Yes I did, currently rebuilding the head with new valves as they are pretty worn.

Huh, it could just be a noisy diesel then. I'd say you've done your due diligence then and checked everything so if it was mine, I'd just run it with a smile on my face :D

Cleaned the injectors, rebuild the head. If it didn't fix the noise, I am going to do just that.

Bottom-end parts are no longer available. I have been running it like that for a year and it hasn't gotten any worse.

A bit late maybe but have you changed the oil (fairly) recently? If not, might help to change the oil for something new and fresh. Might quiet it down a bit.

@Maxwell-8 @sjoemie himself  , know this will upset the purests , but  RISLONE  ZINC  OIL ADDITIVE  is made for older type/ style engines . have not had a recovered engine , that has not responded , with smoke free , much easier running  , in a very short  time , personally , like to " run in easily  " an older engine on a seperate gallon or two , of fresh  heavily treated fuel . the oil color very quickly  is showing you cleaning / varnish removal results . of course not talking about an instant elimination of issue . thats the typical thought , get some hours on it , thats how mine always , works . like a rock in a garbage can, to much easier / smoother , cleaner running engine ,   @ sojoemie himself  can probably relate to a degree , his past  insight / reference , also the oil in his veins , regularly  shows'. his views on repetitive  issues ,  just a thought , pete

Time for an update, I took apart the head. Nothing seemed wrong, one valve was worn deeper into the head then others. One valve guide was broke as well.

Put in all new valves and guides. Lapped them and put everything back together. The knock is completely gone and I have an noticeable increase in compression. 

Still fighting a small coolant leak but she runs good and silent. Still a little bit hard to start. It takes time but she always start so not a big deal.

@Maxwell-8  glad you are gaining on it ! ,  did a very thorough  functional detailing on my small engine , choke and throttle linkages , verified the very slight / light  reactions , and ensured  choke/ throttle plate , entire sealing / choke / start mode , mine were just a tad off , not giving the prefered piston / suck draw / fuel / choke setting , also went over all my choke and throttle cabling , lubrication , personally like 3-1 orange  bottle ,penetrating  penetrating oil or  SUPER LUBE  for a verified cable lubrication , cables, can  should move with little to no resistance. have also added cable springs , on lever linkage ends. always assisting , pulling to close , that way your cables always have a spring assist to move , trying to find my related  pictures , pete
