Throttle control - dead space from Idle to 1/2 way

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, having trouble finding any info on the throttle lever and corresponding cable adjustment.

Tractor runs great. RPMs max out at 3500 rpm at full throttle, if memory serves me right.

Not sure if this is normal though: on the throttle lever, from idle to about 1/2 way up, the RPMs don't change.

With the engine off, I can see that the cable is pulling evenly from Idle to Full Throttle; however, that initial movement is just taking up what seems like slack in the cable.

Wasn't sure if this was an easy adjustment and if so, how to do it, or if it was best to just let it be.

It's just kind of annoying because when starting the tractor up, I move the throttle to about halfway up, but sometimes it's right at that turning point where the RPMs are actually closer to idle than halfway.

Thanks guys as always! Love this place!

This could be a if it works, don't fix it.  However, if you want to play with it just remember what you moved and how far so you can put it back.  Your tractor may not look like this, but it works the same way.  The 1st pic shows the screw that holds the housing for the throttle cable.  You might be able to pull some of that back toward the front of the horse, but the part that matters is conected to your governor stuff.

The second pic shows 3 positions you can try after playing with the 1st pic.  Look at top of the carb.

Hopefully, someone with the same engine will come in here and be better informed.  :bow-blue:

@stevasaurus thanks for the advice! Maybe I'll try putting the cable into another hole and seeing what happens... after taking photos before, of course!

@RED-Z06 that is really great to know... sounds like this might just be a K series thing then! That's exactly how mine is.

Just so you understand moving that upper rod that goes over to the governor changes responsiveness of the governor.

So that may accomplish what you are wanting.

It also may make the engine "hunt" (speed up and down at low or high speeds) which you don't want.

But its a simple adjustment to but back to where you found it, and that's how you learn about these engines.

The throttle cable is applying pressure to the governor system, it is not directly connected to the carburetor. This is normal and the governor will react to the cable position when it is running and load conditions change.
