520H Starting question

Recommended Posts

Thetbone

When starting the tractor, it takes 10 minutes of on and off cranking to start, choke does not seem to help...when I remove the air filter housing, it starts right up.

I just had work done to the carb and new air filter, new gas filter.

Any ideas on what is going on??

Is the vacuum hose connected from the manifold to the power meter?

With no vacuum leaks, carburetor done right and valves adjusted, an Onan will do a cold start with the choke closed and the throttle about one third.  After it fires, the choke can be pushed off and perhaps need a quick blip on for a couple of times.

My guess is that you had the carburetor worked on by someone that didn't use the Onan Service Manual.

I will check that...he most likely did not reference Onan service manual.

Thanks

Is the air filter housing housing interfering with governor, choke, or throttle linkage?

I would start by replacing the fuel hose from  the tank to the fuel pump, any slight crack will let air in and the fuel pump won't pump air.

I just put an electric fuel pump on my 520H to solve the slow start from the fuel losing prime problem that exists with most tractors with the tank below the fuel pump.

If this one starts easily with the air cleaner off, there must be a different problem.

I am interested in doing the same thing.  What are the specs/model of the electric pump you used?

While using an electric fuel pump might be a good idea, it will do nothing to fix your problem.
