KT 17 engine I.D. ?

Recommended Posts

is there a document or database resource somewhere that provides the kt 17 engine serial number info --

i have a C175, Series 1, KT 17 with a engine Serial number 12170338 --- just wondering if there is info somewhere of its production date and other spec history? The other part of the decal is missing  -- it only shows the Serial number ?

i wanted to cross reference Serial #  to determaine if its a 24200, 24223, etc?

i believe based on tractor # 01-17KE03 the engine is a 24223 -- but that assumes it is original factory engine still in tractor ---  or may not be and could be a replacement engine so that's why i wanted to check the engine serial # itself?

thanks, Bill

I think you mean Spec # not serial #..

Kohler Produced 5 spec number KT17 Series 1 for Wheel horse.  24125  24147 24171  24200  24223

I assume because of the failure rate  WH ordered a Series 2 as service replacement engines.  Guess they got them so the dealers could try to please angry customers.  The engines are painted gray.

EDIT:  Kohler produced 5 Series 2 spec# for WH  24323   24336  24340 (1985 417-8)   24350  (1985 417-A)   24363 (1986 417-8 and A)

I assume the first two spec numbers were service engines...  I have one i will look later to see what spec number it is she is asleep for the winter.

EDIT 2    The Gray series 2 service engine I have is 24336

PETE --- i have two C175s --- one is a 1983 Tractor Series 1 black engine that i was asking about -- i believe based on tractor # 01-17KE03 the engine is a spec 24223 ---

however, because the engine decal is partially gone i only have the engine SERIAL NUMBER - SEE PHOTO - therefore i wanted to use the engine SERIAL # to cross reference to confirm the SPEC # is in fact 24223 -- i could assume the SPEC is 24223 because that's the spec that corresponds to the tractor i.d. but since there is no way to confirm the engine was not swapped into this tractor i instead wanted to use the SERIAL number to confirm its SPEC ?

I hope i am clearer now?????????????

As an added note my second C175 is 1984 model and is a gray engine

thanks for all the help Bill

As indicated before serial 12170338  was produced in 1982 way before Series 2.  Beyond that I d not know of any sure fire way to match serial # to Spec # and I doubt that there are  any serious differences between the various WH series 1 spec numbers....

WH may have used a previous year engine in early 1983 production which might be the 24200 spec.

Quick glance at variations shows different air intake and shrouds.  Does your engine have a tear drop shape air cleaner or a round one with a snout???

--- i noticed my engine number did start as 82 production even tho tractor is 83 - - so i assumed it was just a holdover black '82 S1 engine installed in an 83 tractor ??

my engine is round breather with seasonal adjustable snout  -- i have noticed over the yrs that the tear drop breathers appear on the earlier c175s from 80 maybe 81?
