Bar Nuthin 460 #1 Posted November 9 When changing tires on my C-120, I noticed there was some wobble in each hub. Upon closer inspection I noticed that there were set screws on the back side of the hub. Being curious, I removed the set screws and gently slid the hubs off. Upon inspection, I was pleased to see that there was plenty of room in the keyways for adjustment. Now I just need to research and find out if I should rotate the keyway to the left, right, or dead center before tightening down the set screw.
ri702bill 8,479 #2 Posted November 9 Sorry, both the hub and the axle are damaged. BUT - there are fixes for both, if you are willing to go the extra mile. A couple of things - is there only one setscrew per hub?? Later models had 2 at 90 degrees apart. You were LUCKY to get the hubs off - that one looks like the seal may be leaking and lubed it up while it was wiggling. Looks like it "walked" inward too by the chewed up edge. Are the axle bearings good or not?? Is there play up & down?? OK - fixes. Axle - that wallowed out section CAN be welded up & recut - requires disassembling the Unidrive. Hubs - Isavetractors (I believe) sells hubs that address both issues using a special hub and a taper lock bushing. Easy to install & remove. Pricey, but worth it to fix the issue without disassembling the trans.

Looks like it "walked" inward too by the chewed up edge. Are the axle bearings good or not?? Is there play up & down?? Sorry guys, I knew this post would get rise from someone. The wet seal is from the PB blaster I soaked everything down with. Also, I didn't just slip them off - but I was lucky enough to get them off with a hub puller without needing to heat them. There isn't any up/down/side play in the axle but there is about 1/8" in and out. I measured the axles the best I could with my calipers and got 1 1/8" all spots I checked. Filed down the ridges around the key slots, polished the axles with a strip of emery cloth, then cleaned with brake cleaner. Installed the tapered repair hubs I got from @A-Z Tractor. Hated to spend the money, but it seemed like the best approach. Those things are really nice! Wish I had thought to order them from him directly instead of fleabay (fees ). Seems pretty solid but only time will tell.
ri702bill 8,479 #5 Posted November 9 Taper lock bushings have been around for a long time - used in custom machinery like I used to design. They DO work great for reversing loads - cam lock devices do not. Good choice - and they are transferable to a different tractor later.....

What are your thoughts on 1/8" in/out play (probably less than that) in the axles? Something I will have to address at some point? C-120 Automatic. This is my first garden tractor, so I'm not familiar Edited November 10 by Bar Nuthin

I use the jungle site LAST for purchase but I often do research there. Fleeebay I do use on a regular basis because it's easy and the seller gets a reduced rate on shipping to partially compensate them for the fleefees. Still..... I do NOT use any middle sales site when avoidable. Nice job on those hubs. I've wondered how difficult it would be to make a set of my own.....
Bar Nuthin 460 #9 Posted November 10 I'm hoping these hubs will be reasonable to remove when I go to tackle next Spring's project.
ri702bill 8,479 #10 Posted November 10 Taper lock devices are super easy to remove - the same screws that lock it are used in a second set of holes to jack it apart.

Cutting the taper to match a store-bought bushing is not too easy and must be done correctly to match the locking angle........

The process looks pretty straight forward. I'll make sure I have new axle seals on hand before I attempt it. My anxiety comes from what else I might find when I take it apart. It seems to be the way things go.

Instructions and advice and parts are all readily available.

Actually, I thought I'd hang onto them in case I ever needed to fashion up a hub puller. I don't know that I'll ever own another Wheel Horse, but I can't rule it out either. 1 hour ago, WHX?? said: Yes to all members please don't scrap hubs you may deem shot.
