squonk 41,389 #1 Posted November 9 (edited) @WHX?? was questioning the maker of the Napa 1410 transmission filter. I needed one for this 875 I acquired. It had an ancient red WH filter on it. Went to Napa. First thing I noticed was the box was plain cardboard and cheaply made. Instead of the old wax coated boxes they used to have. Now we all spout "Made in America!! I don't want any Chinesium and other such baloney. The next thing I notice is the label. "Contents Made in USA" Great! I take it home and open the box. The next thing I notice is the filter isn't wrapped in cling wrap like almost all hydraulic filters are or used to be. Oh well. now I go to put some oil on the gasket and I notice this horrendous looking crimp job on the filter! Now compare it to a used 1410 that I had kicking around to flush a hydro if I ever needed to. You can see the difference. The weird looking filter is on. We'll see. Next time I'm going to have to order a WIX and see what I get. Edited November 9 by squonk 5 1 1
WHX?? 49,181 #2 Posted November 9 Did you ask yer counter boys if the Balwin thing is true? Sure doesn't look like the same filters or they went thru the same stamping dies.

EB-80/8inPA 1,669 #4 Posted November 9 We’re in uncharted territory at this point, it seems. I’m about to order another carb from isavetractors to replenish stock in anticipation of installing the one I had on hand that was manufactured in, I think, Taiwan? These proposed tariffs will necessitate domestic manufacturing improvements, it seems, but I sure hope the transition is doable. If not? Oh well. It’s a huge question. It’s sad to see a domestic outfit producing that low quality product. Disheartening. I remember when…
JCM 9,410 #5 Posted November 9 I recently picked up an AC Delco oil filter from a local Chevrolet Dealership for my 2500 HD. When the counter guy came out with it and handed me a new filter without a box I looked at him . he looked at me. I paid for it with no words spoken. At least you got a box. Handy Don 12,472 #7 Posted November 9 To me, if it seals properly and the filtration works correctly for its expected lifetime, any elaboration on the innards is gilding the lily.

squonk 41,389 #9 Posted November 9 I change the oil in my C160 transmission every year. I do it right after the show. I'm going to cut the filter I take off and compare it to the pictures I took of one cut open years ago. Then at some point I will do the same with this new one.

Bill D 1,941 #11 Posted November 9 I see the Baldwin BT8486 crosses to the WIX 51410. I believe it's made in the USA. Maybe this would be a good option if the WIX filters are being made overseas.

SAD The dealers are sent oil filters in "sell packs". Basically its a large box with 12 filters in it, with dividers, and they are not packaged individually within the pack. It is rare to find individally packaged filters in a dealership parts department. The only oil filters my place keeps in the individual packs is three FL-1A oil filters because I buy two a year for my own vehicles and we have a cooler flusher that uses it. That filter is otherwise obsolete. Anything we sell more than 12 in a year we keep in sell packs. 2
WHX?? 49,181 #13 Posted November 9 (edited) 11 hours ago, squonk said: Nobody in that store would know. Trust me Can't find good help?? In case you guys didn't catch my other post ... Stopped at a NAPA today to try and cross the oil filter in anticipation of the first oil change. No dice no cross to a Napa gold or any other brand so it seems. Napa guy told me their filters are no longer supplied by WIX. He said WIX could not keep up with the demand so NAPA switched to Baldwin ... for some or all? ... of their filter requirements. He also said all the part Nos changed. So a 1410 is no longer a 1410? They changed to a longer number(s) but said the all NAPA's old numbers would easily cross, Anyone gets to their NAPA and has a knowledgeable counter person ask about this and see if they can verify. I'm gonna start looking for (decent) filters elsewhere after reading Squonkies pics. and the $27 I paid for a mini filter at NAPA for the missus's 14-38HLX Briggs. That and $$$$ for a HY filter for the log splitter. Edited November 9 by WHX??

squonk 41,389 #15 Posted November 9 (edited) 47 minutes ago, WHX?? said: Can't find good help?? In case you guys didn't catch my other post ... Store got bought out years ago. When I was there, we had 4 guys counting me that knew the nuts and bolts of the Automotive, Industrial and Farm trade. Today the store is managed by a girl who knows how to look up stuff on the computer and manage inventory. Her Mother in Law works there mainly keeping the shelves stocked, price labels up to date (PITA), Another girl (20's something) works on the counter. Maybe be some kind of relative / friend. Who knows? Boyfriend works on the counter too and probably knows the most but can be snarky. Another guy who owned a rival store that got bought out is there but he had some kind of health issue years ago and isn't as sharp as he used to be. And then there's Art. Art was a delivery driver in my day and well Art is Art. I always tell him "When you need a part, call Art and get the right part from the start!" He's another key pusher and kinda slow I use Napa because I "used to know their product" I have NAPA Pro-link so I can look up stuff and check availability from home or my phone. The other 4 parts stores around here are the same or worse. And I'm not buying the "Wix couldn't keep up demand" line. I'm sure somebody outbid Wix to Napa corporate and it's all about the Franklins. That 1410 cost me close to $20 a couple of years ago and now it's $14. Wix has plants all over the world making filters. I'm sure whoever is supplying them now does the same. Those 2 filters I mentioned in your ATV thread one was made in Vietnam the other in China. Could be multiple suppliers involved. Bill D 1,941 #16 Posted November 9 I've also seen Zinga filters for sale at Surplus Center. They appear to be made in the USA. Not sure what crosses to a 1410. I'll probably just continue to order the WIX 51410 from Rock Auto and hope for the best.
