How much weight is too much?

Horsingaround!

Im building a miniature etnyre style chipspreader with a 520h frame with conveyors, actuators and everything. And it needs to be able to handle at least 2 1/2 - 3 ton on the frame. Im worried im gonna snap something. Is there a good way i could reinforce the frame somehow?

Sounds like a very interesting project. I'd love to see pics or plans or whatever.

Two and a half to three tons is at least twice what I would feel safe putting on a wheel horse frame no matter what the axles were.

I'm not sure I would even advise you to try boxing the frame which of course would add exponential strength. If you want to put 6,000 lb on a rolling chassis I'd advise building something custom.

Take a look at the frame on a trailer that is rated for three tons, that is a starting point. What were you planning to use for axles, wheels and tires?  There is no way the Wheel Horse running gear is going to last under that load. If you boxed the frame with some 2" X 2" 3/8 thick angle iron it might not fold up but it probably wouldn't hold that load at the connection points for the axles.

@Horsingaround!  personally think you are looking for trouble , far exceeding stress / strain on that frame , worse yet  , HOW ABOUT THAT FRONT END ?  another glairing  problem is the hydraulic lifting  / force movement areas , have seen many  cracked frames , related , wallowed out mount areas , think I would look for a heavier built unit , as stated that front end , could easily blow out those bearings / hubs , axel mount point . agree with @ebinmaine on a custom / specific build . pete

I'm with the rest of the gang, don't think that a 520 frame will handle that much weight. I also don't think that you can find 12" tires to handle that much weight either.

A pic of a typical 3ton wagon running gear.

One other note: I would not suggest pulling 3 ton with any :wh:. Ohhh, it will probably pull it !! :auto-layrubber:It's the stopping it that can be an issue. :auto-swerve:

I agree with all the comments. Using a WH frame puts you in the "Right Church, wrong Pew" area. Axles, tires, brakes - all need to be properly sized for the application. NOT seeing any WH parts there...

Heavy equipment is typically built using heavy plate steel sides as a starting point. If you build it we would love to seed a thread on the build and updates on your progress.           :wwp:           Guess you could use the 520 hood though..

The minimum safety factor on most things is double the actual load. Your already looking at 6 tons.

I suggest you google minimum safety factor and read all that is shown.
